Responsibilities

Responsible for the installation, repair and preventative maintenance of chillers, ice machines, air conditioners, freezers, dietary equipment, air-handling units, and all units used for the purposes of refrigeration. Requires the interpersonal skills necessary to discuss equipment problems and exchange information on factual matters. Skills necessary to repair or modify equipment and skills necessary to troubleshoot HVAC systems.

  • Install and maintain pneumatic controls and/or Direct Digital Controls (DDC). Daily interfaces with computerized Energy Management Systems.

  • Work to maintain efficiency of chillers with a goal of reducing utility expenses related to the operation of the chillers. Start and Stop Chillers to as needed to maintain appropriate building temperatures.

  • Assist other skilled trades and general maintenance personnel as assigned. In doing so, may assist with assembly of equipment.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair functions while ensuring that affected department is prepared for and is minimally inconvenienced by work performed.

  • Responsible to be knowledgeable in usage of Building Automation System for control of Air Handlers and Associated Equipment.

  • Responsible to have knowledge and understanding of the Pneumatic Tube System to assist maintenance mechanics with troubleshooting system problems.

  • Act as a resource person for the Medical Center. Ensure that refrigeration and air-handling units are adequate for stated needs and that all requirements, codes and regulations are strictly followed.

  • Assist in the orientation and training of new employees. May provide structured in-services on points of particular interest or concern.

Requirements

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • Certification specializing in EPA Refrigerant Handling obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

  • Certification.Must possess certification through the Michigan Society for Healthcare Engineering (MiSHE) MECH program preferred.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.

  • Two (2) years post-high school education focused in Applied Science and Technology or equivalent is required.

  • Three (3) years of related work experience is required. Experience with Pneumatic and Digital Controls and Computerized Energy Management Systems is required.

Additional Preferences

Experience:

  • HVAC certified and prior experience

  • Prior hospital experience preferred
