Responsibilities

Facility Overview: The MCF Cytometry and Imaging Lab maintains shared resources that support a wide range of basic and translational research on the Florida campus of the Mayo Clinic. Staff in the facility manage, operate and train users on a variety of equipment, including flow cytometers, cell sorters, microscopes, slide scanners, and a mass cytometer, to analyze a wide variety of cell types. We are embedded in a vibrant research environment with investigators focused on cancer cell biology, immunology and neuroscience. The facility has extensive experience with high-parametric flow cytometry and tissue analysis, cell sorting, immune monitoring and state-of-the art digital imaging.

Position Overview : We are seeking a highly motivated individual who has a strong desire to learn state-of-the-art technology, enjoys being “hands on” with high-end instrumentation, and works well in a team setting. The candidate will primarily be responsible for supporting our fluorescent microscopes (LSM880 confocal microscope with AiryScan and EVOS M5000), digital whole-slide scanners (AT2 and PhenoImager HT), and image storage/analysis environment (currently eSlideManager and ImageScope). The incumbent will operate and maintain these technologies, train users on them, provide support for sample analysis, and lend their expertise to planned upgrades. Ideal candidates understand that imaging technology can be both broadly essential and cutting edge. The person in this position must think independently, communicate clearly, be customer-service minded, and have an enthusiasm for high-tech equipment and the science that they enable.

Position responsibilities include:

•Operate and maintain imaging equipment, currently including a LSM880 confocal microscope with AiryScan, an EVOS M5000 microscope, an AT2 whole-slide scanner, and a PhenoImager HT whole-slide scanner.

• Operate and maintain a digital slide environment and analysis tools interface, currently eSlideManager and ImageScope

• Teach researchers proper and independent use of the equipment, digital slide environment, and analysis tools

•Advise users regarding potential microscopy and slide-scanning projects

•Interact with equipment vendor field specialists for proper care and maintenance of the equipment

•Other equipment and facility responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science with 4 years of research laboratory experience. Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred.

  • The person in this position must be detail-oriented, with excellent organization and documentation skills.

  • This person must have a strong work ethic, self-motivation, and the ability to troubleshoot instrument problems independently and logically once trained.

  • This person must have strong communication skillsto work with researchers from a wide variety of fields and educational backgrounds.

Additional experience and/or qualifications :

Preferred but not required:

  • Demonstrated experience with fluorescence microscopy, tissue staining for microscopy, whole-slide scanning, and/or image analysis.

  • Experience with microscopy experimental design (sample preparation, equipment choice and optimization, and data analysis).

  • Willingness to work flexible and occasional late shifts as needed.

  • Other desirable experience includes familiarity with cell culture and/or general biological tissue handling, experience with laboratory management, and/or experience developing teaching material.

$64,500.80 - $ 96,824.00 / year; Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
