Teaching Associate--Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)

We are looking for two Teaching Associates who will assist in supporting the teaching of several courses within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University including CHEM 2070, CHEM 2080, CHEM 2090, and the laboratory sections associated with those classes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Teaching Associates will support the Faculty and Lecturers in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in teaching CHEM 2070, 2080 and 2090 (most likely) and/or other courses in the department based on need and demonstrated skills, and the laboratory sections associated with those classes, during both the Fall and Spring semesters. Chem2070/2080/2090 cover General Chemistry and focus on fundamental chemical principles, with considerable attention given to the quantitative aspects and techniques important for further work in chemistry. Main topics include chemical transformations and equations, periodic trends of the elements, electronic structure of atoms, chemical bonding, and the collective behavior of molecules. CHEM 2070 is the prerequisite for CHEM 2080. CHEM 2090 is aimed primarily at students within the College of Engineering. For CHEM 2070/2080, there are three fifty-minute lectures per week, small group problem solving sessions, and 3-hour long laboratory sections of approximately 22 undergraduate students. For CHEM 2090, there are three fifty-minute lectures per week and 3-hour long laboratory sections of approximately 22 undergraduate students. Specific duties will be determined by student enrollment, availability of graduate teaching assistants and departmental needs.


For each section, duties will include:

  • supervise four (4) three-hour laboratory sections each week
  • grade laboratory reports for all students enrolled in your section
  • maintain a safe working environment by adhering to all safety regulations
  • attend the course lectures
  • attend weekly TA meetings
  • hold two 50-minute office hours each week
  • proctor and grade midterm exams and the final exam
  • grade weekly quizzes
  • maintain accurate records of student grades in an online gradebook for your students
  • provide feedback and assistance to the course instructor as requested
  • provide general administrative support as necessary

These positions are 9-month academic appointments and are renewable depending on funding and satisfactory performance of duties.


QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. degree in chemistry, biology, or related field, and experience in teaching lab management.


PAY RANGE: $50,000- $69,600


Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
