Sr Research Associate--Northeast Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT), Cornell University (Argonne, IL)

The Northeastern Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT), located at the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory in suburban Chicago, is seeking applicants for an Associate Director position at the Sr. Research Associate level. The primary duty will be to ensure that the technical capabilities of the facility beamlines can support NE-CAT's scientific goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Associate Director (AD) will be responsible for all technical aspects of operations at NE-CAT. The role encompasses many responsibilities:

• Developing the Scientific Program -while NE-CAT has an established scientific program, the field is ever-evolving, and the NE-CAT scientific program changes to keep pace. The AD collaborates with the Director, NE-CAT Primary Investigators, Executive Committee, staff, and user groups to design a scientific program that meets the demands of our user community and funding agency and keeps NE-CAT state-of-the-art.
• Managing the Technical Team - While the AD is a leadership position for NE-CAT, a small technical team will comprise their direct reports. The technical team has significant expertise in all the mechanical and electronic systems that make up the beamlines. To be successful, the candidate must be capable of working closely with others to accomplish shared goals. The facility is well-established, and to become proficient the candidate must learn from the current technical staff. Being able to communicate well in English is essential.
• Operations Support and Beamline Maintenance - NE-CAT has an active user community with more than 1,500 users per year performing experiments on two beamlines. Operations are 24 hours per day and minimal downtime can be tolerated. The AD makes sure that the beamlines are dependable and consistently operate optimally. Operational support is 24 hours daily, and the AD will be on call during user operations.
• Control System Software Development - As experimental requirements evolve and personnel changes, it is expected that the beamline control system software will need to be updated and/or replaced. The AD is expected to lead this project and have the skills and experience to drive the development. The control system is a critical piece of the beamline, and this project is crucial.
• Developing and Disseminating New Technologies - The AD will be expected to develop new technologies to meet the experimental needs of the NE-CAT user community. MX is a constantly evolving field, and the experimental capabilities must evolve to both maintain state-of-the-art as well as offer new capabilities to our users. The AD will be responsible for both determining what is possible and then implementing that vision in collaboration. The expectation is that all new technologies and their implementation will be shared with the scientific community by publication and presentation.
• Reporting and Grant Writing -Primary funding for NE-CAT operations comes from the NIGMS. The AD will play a significant role in both the planning and writing of grant applications and periodic reports. Additionally, the AD is responsible for interacting with the various committees that advise and review the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Extensive experience with experimental instrumentation and software projects.
• Ph.D. in chemistry, biology, or related field.
• Experience in X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, experience in lab management.
• Minimum of ten years of experience after a Ph.D. in academia.
• Excellent publication record.

This is a 12-month benefits eligible full-time (100%FTE) three-year appointment term which is renewable depending on funding and performance.

Salary: commensurate with experience
