Mott MacDonald is seeking a Senior Environmental Specialist to support various infrastructure jobs in the tri-state area. The role will be situated in our Morristown, Iselin or New York City offices and primarily consists of leading environmental reviews, permitting, environmental assessments, transactional due-diligence, and permit compliance aspects of projects. The position will include managing compliance for construction projects and working with the overall project team to confirm that construction of a major project goes ahead with the appropriate level of evaluation, taking into consideration regulations of appropriate federal, state and local agencies. Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Identification, review and application of various environmental regulations, from local, state and federal sources. Primary focus on NY/NYC with secondary knowledge of NJ permitting processes. Plus, to have knowledge and experience on NEPA SEQRA/CEQR permitting.
  • Development of permitting strategies and associated schedule and budget plans.
  • Coordination with multi-disciplined internal team members to ensure deliverables comply with agency requirements.
  • Performance of environmental reviews to identify potential permitting requirements.
  • Preparation of permits, permit packages and permit compliance correspondence.
  • Preparation of technical reports and documentation, including environmental due diligence reports (e.g., Transactional Phase I ESAs) as well as environmental permitting components/plans.
  • Effective communication with senior staff, subcontractors and clients
  • Preparation and development of proposals for submission to clients.
  • Supporting strategic, environmental elements of regional infrastructure projects including projects in the transportation, water, and renewable energy sectors.
  • Working with public stake holder groups, regulatory agencies and authorities (federal, state and local).
  • Liaising with clients, responding to queries and attending meetings (client, public and/or regulatory).
  • Experience with mapping software (ArcMap, AutoCAD, GIS) a plus but not required.
  • Understanding and ability to integrate climate and equity considerations into funding applications, permitting strategies and related documents.
  • Plus, but not required - working knowledge of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the ability to align projects with these goals to attain positive social outcomes.

Our environmental staff has worked with our own, our clients', and other consultants' planning and design teams for major projects, across all sectors.

We invite applications from candidates with:

  • Experience in environmental assessment and permitting and an understanding of regulatory procedures (e.g., BOEM, USACE, NEPA, SEQR, NMFS, USFWS, state and local permitting).
  • Experience with federal, state and local environmental regulations; with a preference of experience in Federal and New York State and City regulations. Knowledge of New Jersey and Pennsylvania regulations a plus.
  • A bachelor's degree in a relatable major including environmental science, geology, biology, engineering.
  • Experience in environmental discipline/service areas such as NEPA documentation, protection of endangered species and marine resources, transactional due diligence/site remediation, stormwater and spill prevention planning and permitting.
  • 10 to 15 years' relatable experience in environmental permits, planning, assessment, environmental evaluation, etc.

Salary Range: $125,000- $135,000
