General Purpose
The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for the position of Zoo Facilities Assistant for the Idaho Falls Zoo at
Tautphaus Park. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to the construction, repair and
maintenance of zoo grounds buildings, and facilities. Position is year-round full-time.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under close supervision of the Zoo Facilities Manager. May provide direction to zoo volunteers, community service
workers or work detail.

Supervision of seasonal employees, zoo volunteers, community service workers or work detail.
Essential Functions
Day-to-day facilities and grounds maintenance, operations and repair projects, construction projects, and cleaning and
maintenance of zoo buildings (to include public restrooms, offices, and equipment and tool storage areas).
Performs repairs and construction by utilizing a variety of hand and power tools which may include shovel, rake, lawn
mower, weed trimmer, chain saw, circular saw, drill, table saw, and others to ensure the safety of the animals, employees,
volunteers, and the public.
Observes public to ensure that safety regulations are adhered to. Performs regular security checks throughout entire zoo.
Performs general maintenance and upkeep of equipment by performing preventive maintenance and repairs; repairs and
maintains sprinkler lines and sprinkler heads.
Some skill in the operations of light equipment, such as backhoe, mowing equipment, front-end loader, tractor, etc.
Ability to follow detailed work instructions in the performance of assigned duties; ability to communicate effectively, verbally
and in writing; ability to perform strenuous physical labor; ability to tolerate year-round weather extremes in the work
environment; recognize and identify common weed and pests; recognize and identify disease common to turf and
greenery; ability to develop effective working relationship with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
Assists with preparing zoo facilities for special events or promotions.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience: A. Graduation from high school or equivalent;
AND
B. 2 or more years of experience in construction, facilities maintenance, grounds keeping, or related fields;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of basic
maintenance procedures; some knowledge of basic carpentry; some knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related
to above duties.
Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools: ability to work in all weather extremes; ability to perform strenuous
physical labor, ability to operate small motorized vehicles; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to
communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with fellow employees
and the public.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must be able to work some late shifts, holidays and weekends.
Must be able to follow zoo safety procedures and protocols.
Must have a valid Idaho driver\'s license or be able to obtain one within two months of hire.
Job offer will be contingent on final candidate passing a background check.
Work Environment
This position is at the Zoo and involves working around exotic animals. Tasks involve exposure to dust, al ergens, and
zoonotic disease. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking,
standing, stooping, sitting, bending at the waist, reaching, lifting (regularly lifting 50 pounds and occasionally moving up to
80 pounds). Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to the performance of the job. Daily exposure to weather extremes
and seasonal conditions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exists. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal
instructions, discriminating thinking.
