The Chief Legal Counsel position is responsible for directing legal work for OPI, including agency legal support, contracts, licensure, rulemaking, litigation, legal advice to the Superintendent, and other tasks as assigned. This is a personal exempt staff position according 2-18-104, MCA and serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent. The position oversees an evolving number of general attorneys, paralegals, and/or administrative support staff.__ _Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors):_ · Enthusiasm for learning and applying legal skills in a fast-paced, public agency. · Interest in the diverse aspects of public agency and education legal work. · Skills in how to read, review, prepare, and understand legal documents for administrative, contract, licensure, rulemaking, and litigation work. · Skills in legal research, including books, on-line search tools, and the internet. · Skills in use of a personal computer, office productivity software, copy machines, and other office equipment and computer programs. · Ability to coordinate projects, timelines, and deadlines. · Ability to prepare, proofread, and submit documents with proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. · Ability to communicate, including with the public, in person, electronically, or in writing in a concise and comprehensive manner. · Ability to prepare and organize physical and electronic files. · Preferred experience in managing staff, diverse legal work experience, and knowledge of Montana’s education system and/or state government. _Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience_): · Membership in good standing as an attorney with the State Bar of Montana. · Two years of work experience as an attorney. · Experience working collaboratively in a past-faced, professional environment. _Does this sound like you?_ Please tell us how and why by submitting your resume online, including any veterans or disability preference documentation.When submitting the required documents, you must check the “relevant document” box to ensure your attachments are uploading correctly to the specific application for this position.Documents not requested will not be considered in the recruitment process.
