Clarke County Commission E-911 Public Safety Telecommunicator in Grove Hill, Alabama

Under the direct supervision of the TAC officer/E-911 supervisor, the employee performs dispatching duties for the County. Employee ensures that callers receive accurate information and that law enforcement agencies are properly updated in emergency situations. Provides direction and assurance to irate and/or emotional callers. Employee also maintains required records within the Center and assists in the efficient operation of the Center. Deadline to apply is July 15, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications * Possession of a High School Diploma or GED * Possess one year of work experience; however any combination of education and experience that provides for the above qualifications will be considered. * Ability to gain Certifications in: CPR (within first six months); APCO (within first year), Paverphone EMD Course. * NCIC Certification preferred * Ability to attend training and continuing education courses * Ability to remain on call in case of emergencies

Work Environment The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles, eg., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc. The work area is adequately light, heated and ventilated.

Physical Demands The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, driving an autombile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Job Domains

A. Telecommunications - Dispatching

  1. Answeres 911 telephone calls from the public and questions caller to determine the nature and location of the problem; calls back disconnects as required
  2. Extracts and records essential information and gives proper advice or information to callers to include emergency medical pre-arrival instructions.
  3. Dispatches via radio or telephone, emergency and other calls or services to the proper police, fire, and EMS agencies or units
  4. Maintains strict radio discipline at all times; complies with FCC regulations and Center policies and procedures in transmission of all radio traffic.
  5. Determines the agency or department responsible and tranfers emergency and other calls for service to the appropriate agency for dispatch.
  6. Maintains proper logs of all units dispatched.
  7. Updates information as it is received to dispatched field units via radio.
  8. Notifies other agencies and/or assists units of emergency calls; coordinates their response by providing information and directions via radio or telephone.

B. Office Duties

  1. Maintains records of warrants, accident reports, stolen property and missing persons.
  2. Runs criminal history, performs background checks, and checks for pistol permits
  3. Answers non-emergency calls, including addressing line to provide routine non-technical information upon request; refers all other questions to the proper person or agency.
  4. Assists with the maintenance of maps, and all communications equipment.
  5. Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
  6. Performs administrative and clerical tasks, data entry and retrieval essential to the effective operation of the communication center.
  7. Attends specialized training for dispatchers.
  8. Keeps computers and office equipment clean.
  9. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowlege, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowlege of County and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  2. Knowledge of proper use and care of telephone, radio, and other equipment
  3. Knowlege of proper procedures for 911 transfers
  4. Knowlege of the proper use of Center emergency medical pre-arrival protocol system
  5. Knowlege of Center and County policies and procedures. 6 Knowledge of geographical area Center serves
  6. Knowledge of organization and functions of public safety respnders.
  7. Knowledge of the responsibilities and areas of jurisdiction of various agences
  8. Verbal skills to fluently and articulately use vocabulary appropriate to the audience
  9. Reading skills to understand written correspondence, memoranda and directives
  10. Computer skills to effectively complete assignments such as E-911 software, mapping software, and general computer applications
  11. Ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations
  12. Ability to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information.
  13. Ability to report events and information in a complete, concise and easy to understand manner
  14. Ability to act in decisive manner using good judgement
  15. Ability to avoid personal involvement in situations
