Description:
The primary purpose of this position is to plan, develop, and administer a comprehensive safety and health program with a high level of diversity, scope, dynamics and complexity involving multiple health and safety compliance issues.
The position is responsible for planning university health and safety goals, developing safety program components, selecting and training staff members, and assuring that standards for quality of work are met. The comprehensive program covers areas of the university including occupational safety, healthcare, new construction, and environmental safety. It will serve as the assistance radiation safety officer.
Secondary responsibilities for this position include responding to after hour (on-call) safety-related situations. The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner (i.e., EPA , OSHA , NCDEQ , OSFMand other Federal/State safety regulations).
Completes duties in a responsible manner, establishes and recommends procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, determines corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified.
This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representatives. This position must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety Department is to provides risk identification, management techniques, and measures for prevention of injury and the protection of property, life, and environment in the support of the mission of the University.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred:
Three to four years of progressive experience in safety systems in a University community environment. Knowledge in specialized areas of environmental safety and health, which should specifically include general occupational safety, chemistry and environmental safety. Ability to analyze and problem-solve using available diagnostic techniques and equipment. A high level of job responsibility must be demonstrated. Ability to apply safety and training-related matters in a concise and accurate approach to the University mission and goals. Familiarity with instructional theory, OSHA and NCDEQ , EPA , NC State of Human Resources, Office of State Fire Marshal, Dept. of Insurance and University administrative and safety guidelines. Ability to research available resources to determine actual procedures required as best practices. Administrative skills and certification or competency in electrical safety, Hazardous Material Technician ( HAZMAT ), Lock Out Tag Out and Asbestos Awareness.

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
