We are seeking a highly motivated, creative Staff Scientist with expertise in cell culture bioprocessing to take a leading role in our internal research efforts. The selected candidate will lead and participate in R&D teams and participate in cross functional teams to perform studies in the areas of new product development, services, and product support for design and development of cell culture media and supplement formulations.

How you will make an impact:

The Cell Biology Staff Scientist is a member of the BioProduction R&D team responsible for the development of cell culture media and supplements. Working directly with a broad cross-functional team we develop products and optimize processes for the biopharmaceutical industry. We analyze the impact of cell culture conditions on metabolism and recombinant protein production to support the manufacture of recombinant therapeutics, we well as gene therapy and cell therapy applications. In addition to development of new media and related products, our new team member will also assist in troubleshooting and optimizing existing products. What you will do:

Our Staff Scientist will work independently and alongside a team of research scientists. Their responsibilities include performing studies in the areas of new product development, services, and product support for design and development of cell culture media and supplement formulations. Additionally, they will provide expertise for cross-functional technology and product development. This leader will participate in and manage meetings with clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Design experimental plans, lead study execution, analyze experimental data, generate laboratory protocols, and write technical reports, quantitative analyses, and product summaries

  • Work on complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors

  • Troubleshoot and solve problems associated with various types of R&D projects

  • Exercise practical judgment within broadly defined practices and policies and exhibit creativity and foresight in selecting approaches and techniques for obtaining solutions

  • Investigate, create, and develop new methods and technologies to improve effectiveness of development workflows

  • Maintain accurate lab notebook to support protection of intellectual property in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards

  • Maintain high level of professional expertise and substantial knowledge of principles and theories through familiarity with competing technologies and/or products, review of current scientific literature, and attendance at scientific seminars and meetings

  • Present data at scientific conferences (external and internal) and prepare other publications when appropriate

  • Interact closely with other internal departments (i.e., Marketing, Business Development, Quality, Operations) in the commercialization of new products and customer and business support

  • Frequent technical interactions with customers through teleconferences, site visits, and/or scientific meetings and with outside collaborators through seminars and publications

  • Perform duties independently with only general direction given

  • Able to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials

  • Work includes flexible hours; travel may be required as much as 5-10%

How you will get here:

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10 plus years of experience, Master's degree with 5 plus years of experience, or Ph.D. degree with 3 plus years of experience in Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or other related discipline, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

  • Expertise in the methods and techniques of small-scale mammalian cell culture

  • Experience in media design and development for cell culture applications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrated technical project leadership experience

  • Proven competence in data analysis, research design, troubleshooting, and the evaluation of new techniques and procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to formulate hypotheses and solve problems

  • Experience in adherent and suspension mammalian cell culture (e.g., CHO, HEK293, Vero, T cells)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, and accurate manner

  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate and adapt to changing project priorities

  • Ability to multi-task effectively and prioritize multiple projects with minimal guidance

  • Experience performing techniques required for protein production or virus infectivity culture and assays or cell therapy workflows

  • Experience with media formulation and preparation

  • Experience with small-scale bioreactors and related laboratory equipment

  • Solid understanding of statistical design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis, including JMP, Minitab, or other statistical software

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range estimated for this position based in New York is $105,000.00–$135,000.00. This position will also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
