At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.

Our Team

We are a committed and successful Project Management team that focuses on environmental projects. We are looking to grow in 2025 to support WSP’s robust pipeline of secured projects. We are proud of our friendly, supportive, and collaborative culture, which allows our team members to develop their skills and grow.

We are a centre of excellence and an integral part of WSP’s Earth & Environment discipline, where we provide leadership and tailored support on our projects. This encompasses PMO, Project Controls, and Project Manager and Project Director roles; we work across all stages of the project delivery cycle.

Our achievements mean we seek an experienced Project Manager with a strong understanding and awareness of environmental consultancy, a passion for optimising project delivery, and an inclusive and supportive approach to team development.

A little more about your role…

As part of the Environmental Project Management leadership group, you will be a visible environmental leader for WSP. You will report to the Environmental Project Management Team Leader. Most of your work will focus on project delivery in a senior project leadership capacity, typically as the designated Project Manager or Project Director. You will lead multi-discipline projects for our Environment business, some led by Environment and some as part of a wider multi-discipline project team with other business units.

The types of projects that we deliver are highly varied and include some of the UK’s most exciting and nationally important large-scale infrastructure schemes (for example National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, East-West Rail and Sizewell C), as well as associated developments and programmes for the built environment. Our clients are public and private entities, and key sectors we operate in include highways, rail, aviation, defence, nuclear, residential and property, energy generation and renewables, and transmission and distribution. We have a broad coverage across the project cycle, from supporting business cases, and securing consents and permits DCO, to design and construction.

As a senior team member, you will have responsibilities including line management and team development, as well as strategic and technical input as part of the Environmental Project Management senior leadership team.

Role Summary

  • For large, complex, and high-value multidisciplinary projects, you will act as the Environmental lead project manager. You will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of the fundamental aspects of project management, including programme, commercial, and quality, whilst promoting a focus on health and safety as well as inclusion and diversity.

  • You will form and manage high-performing project teams, inspiring and energising teams to deliver exemplary work.

  • You will be responsible for delivering environmental principles on projects, including regulatory compliance, mitigation and management of environmental impact, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability, and you will have a working knowledge of key environmental disciplines and services.

  • You will promote and hold the project team accountable for implementing environmental betterment and Future Ready and net-zero strategies.

  • You will actively manage project change and risks, ensuring that project governance is adhered to and projects are delivered compliant and optimised. You will work with technical teams and other specialists to adhere to contractual and scope agreements.

  • You will provide strategic direction for technical improvements and efficiencies in project management approaches and documentation including project management plans, cost estimates and forecasts, risk registers, project schedules, stakeholder registers, and project organisation charts to successfully deliver project objectives.

  • You will manage the drafting of commercial proposals, including determining project requirements, scope, resources, programme, and fee estimates and helping to ensure a compelling and competitive bid.

  • You will add strategic input to and undertake business development activities, including face-to-face meetings and presentations with our clients, relationship building and understanding of client needs, and adapting approaches to respective growth sectors.

  • You will be responsible for the pastoral management of colleagues through WSP’s line management policy.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • An established record of leading projects with an environmental focus, meeting key metrics, notably programme, budget, quality and health, safety and well-being, and realising environmental project benefits and compliance.

  • A strong awareness of Future Ready and net zero strategies and a passion for delivering environmental betterment.

  • Confidence in written and verbal communication, effectively conveying complex technical information to project teams and stakeholders within and outside the organisation.

  • Experience in business development activities, including leading tenders and developing key client and sector relationships.

  • Strong commercial and contractual awareness. Financial acumen and analytical skills with a proven track record of delivering projects within budget and managing change control. Experience with Professional Services Contracts, including NEC3/4.

  • Working knowledge of programme management, including work breakdown structure, dependencies and critical path, and ability to assess MS Project/Primavera P6 or similar outputs.

  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. PMI, MAPM, MIEnvSc, MIEMA, MRICS) and either chartered or working towards chartership/other accreditations.

  • Ability to coordinate and provide training and mentorship to junior colleagues.

  • Presentation skills and excellent time management.
