Position Summary

SUNY Geneseo’s Office of Alumni Relations is searching for an Assistant Director of Alumni Relations to help engage more than 65,000 alumni to build affinity and support for the College. This role serves as a champion of SUNY Geneseo students, faculty, staff and alumni by facilitating mutually beneficial lifelong relationships between the College’s internal and external constituents.

The Assistant Director develops and implements events and programs—including planning, volunteer management, logistics, calendars, and budgets—in cooperation with other colleagues to engage our alumni across the nation. This role serves as staff liaison to the Committee on Regional Chapters of the SUNY Geneseo Alumni Association and manages regional volunteers. The assistant director leads efforts to connect alumni through communications such as the website, all alumni

e-newsletter and social media.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree by time of appointment

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail and proofreading skills, and the ability to effectively manage multiple and competing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and social media platforms.

  • Must be comfortable interacting and communicating with a diverse range of constituents from various backgrounds, ages and experiences, speaking in social settings, and portraying a professional image to all internal and external constituents.

  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours when needed.

  • Ability to travel regularly to support regional events across NYS and the country; valid driver’s license required.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the college’s values of learning, creativity, belonging, civic engagement and sustainability.

    Preferred Qualifications

Three or more years of experience in a related field.

Function 1: Alumni Events

Serve as the lead staff person, in collaboration with the alumni relations team, College Advancement colleagues, and alumni volunteers, to develop and implement a robust and diverse calendar of alumni engagement events across the country in key locations and virtually. Planning and execution includes, but is not limited to, scheduling, securing venues and catering, developing event programs and scripts, securing and working with event speakers, briefing staff including the College President, designing event registration pages and tracking registration, marketing and promoting events, attending events as needed to support on-site logistics, and managing event follow ups.

Function 2: Volunteer management & engagement

Serve as staff liaison to the Committee on Regional Chapters of the SUNY Geneseo Alumni Association. Manage regional alumni chapter volunteers (16 regions) and work with them to engage alumni in their region. In partnership with volunteer leaders, plan and execute Great Knight (annual nationwide simultaneous alumni event). Take an active role in regional chapter formation and chapter leadership transition.

Lead alumni communication efforts to update and improve the website, create and post content on social media channels and manage new channels as applicable, and create and distribute a monthly all alumni e-newsletter. Actively proofread various alumni communications. Lead efforts to implement new modes of communication with alumni and analyze and improve upon existing communications.

Be an active partner in providing customer service to alumni, colleagues and other key constituents by helping to answer inquiries and provide information as needed.

In partnership with the alumni team, assist in the planning and implementation of events like Reunion Weekend and other initiatives as needed.
