Indian Health Service Nursing Assistant in Gallup, New Mexico

Summary This position is located with the Medical Surgical, Intensive Care and Pediatric Units, at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, NM. The position serves as support staff, responsible for the prioritizing of tasks as assigned under the supervision of licensed professional nursing staff utilizing universal precautions and insuring a safe, clean and orderly environment conducive to the delivery of quality nursing care. Responsibilities 02/06/2024: This position is being re-announced to solicit additional candidates. Assists patient in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in accordance to the units' checklist. Provides comfort measures as necessary. Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping and assembling instruments and supplies. Provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direction of a registered nurse in accordance with established unit policy. Provides basic nursing care to patients with a variety of conditions, illnesses, and/or injuries (i.e. routine pre and post op care; routine ante and post partum care; apply and remove simple binders, dressings, slings, braces, etc.; apply heat and cold packs, assist patient in ambulation, transferring, positioning; etc.). Responsible for obtaining and recording patient information as assigned per unit policy (i.e. vital signs, height, weight, l&O, etc.) Shares in the responsibility of maintenance of clinical records and nursing care plans. Assists in admitting and discharging patients. Assists in post-mortem care. Transports patients to various hospital departments. Position performs the following procedures, after approved hospital specific formal training and completion of required competencies. Any required unit specific training and competency testing required to perform on that unit will be completed in addition to the hospital training: Performs less complex dressings and treatments without assistance, Performs venipunctures to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing, Inserts a sterile indwelling bladder catheter and maintains a sterile urinary drainage system, Safely performs oropharyngeal suctioning, Assists the physicians with sterile procedures such as suturing, insertion of chest tubes, spinal tap, and with clean procedures such as cast application, etc. Requirements Conditions of Employment Selectee may be subject to a probationary/trial period ESEP appointees typically serve a two year trial period U.S. Citizenship is required Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Individual Occupational Requirements: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients. -OR- Education and Training: For GS-4: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-04: Applicants must have successfully completed 2 years above high school with course related to the occupation. -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least 6 month of general experience (as stated above) and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Perform treatments, patient care, record patient information, obtain and label specimens, and assist with patient examinations. GS-05: Applicants must have successfully completed 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with course related to the occupation. -OR- Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include most if not all: Distinguish between normal and abnormal findings; to observe physical and emotional reactions to nursing care, procedures, and medications; to make appropriate choices in nursing assistant care, and to report abnormal or changing conditions in a nonprofessional nursing home or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility. Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
