Job Description:

The Department of Medicin, Division of Endocrinology is seeking a Registered Dietitian, preferably Certified Diabetes Educator. This position will provide assessment, education, and medical nutrition therapy for patients with diabetes. This position interacts daily with the Endocrinology faculty and staff who provide guidance, assessment, and direction for patient care problems. Provide telephone follow-up of and communicate patients’ nutritional requirements. Train nurses and other health care providers of the team in the educational needs of patients and in providing telephone follow-up.

-Work directly in Adult Endocrinology clinics (MP, Kanapaha, and DDS) to supporting providers as they see and treat patients.

-Hold independent Registered Dietitian clinics seeing patients in collaboration with providers.

-Independently adjusts medications based on standing orders.

-Follow existing policies and procedures and recommend new ones as needed.

-Interprets blood glucose results and recommends appropriate adjustments in food, insulin, or medication.

-Evaluates laboratory results and recommends and implements modifications to food plan to address complications of diabetes.

-Makes recommendations to patient and primary care provider regarding changes in therapy such as medications for diabetes/lipids and suggests appropriate lab tests according to standing orders.

-Recommends appropriate exercises and physical activity to assist in diabetes management.

-Provides in-depth and up-to-date information on all aspects of diabetes, including but not limited to: pathophysiology, medications, sick day management, label reading, dining away from home, and hypoglycemia.

-Serves as primary resource to interdisciplinary team regarding nutrition management of diabetes and its complications.

-Assist in the development of patient educational materials to promote quality diabetes care.

-Works with Division Chief, endocrine team, and staff to enhance coordination of patient care, patient education, endocrine, and diabetes research.

Essential Functions;

Provide assessment and education to: a) newly diagnosed and b) established patients with diabetes seen at the University of Florida. Create and maintain diabetes education material provided to newly diagnosed patients. Assess each patient’s knowledge base, skills, comprehension, compliance, and educational needs in order to determine essential education needs required to manage diabetes.

Work in Endocrinology clinics independently and with providers to provide dietitian services. Monitors nutritional status; reviews food intake, medical records, and laboratory tests; and makes dietary recommendations. Advises patients regarding preventive and therapeutic nutrition and diet. Provides appropriate approach based on the physiological, emotional, and cognitive needs of patients. Educates other healthcare professionals about food and nutrition. Facilitates communication between patient/family and inter-disciplinary team members; initiates consultations with appropriate interdisciplinary team members.

Expected Salary:

$35,568 - $42,250 Annually

Minimum Requirements:

Must meet the requirements of Chapter 468, Florida Statutes, and have one year of appropriate experience. Licensed as a Dietitian in accordance with Chapter 468, Florida Statutes.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Diabetes Educator. Strongly preferred.
