Job Description:

Perform case processing including receipt of human tissue, gross and fine dissection, tissue

fixation, freezing, cell isolation and RNA isolation, and sample storage. Must participate in rotating on-call

schedule (nights and weekends).

Use and manage multiple laboratory information management systems for donor clinical

information, sample tracking, and histology. Develop and enhance data repositories during transition to

new data systems. Respond to sample requests and coordinate sample distribution and sample inventory

management. Generate reports to analyze facility use and clinical data.

Operate vibratome and perfusion system to obtain fresh tissue slices and perform functional

assessment on tissue. Package and ship tissue slices to researchers at other institutions. Perform

fluorescent imaging and microscopy.

Perform data analysis for researchers using specialized data analysis software. Data will be used

for further statistical analysis and/or publication. Evaluate new data analysis techniques and software.

Review scientific literature to maintain and further understanding of Core technologies.

Train and assess new OPPC staff. Communicate with and provide user training for internal and

external clients regarding OPPC, nPOD, and CaRe-T1D. Edit and write SOPs.

Evaluate new equipment to determine if it meets OPPC specifications. Perform routine lab

maintenance including calibrating and checking specialized equipment for proper function. Perform

periodic preventative maintenance on Core instruments. Troubleshoot equipment failures and arrange for

or help with repairs and test equipment for proper function.

Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

Starting salary is between $50,000 - $52,000

Minimum Requirements:

MS required or 5 years science related, core specific advanced training and work experience and/or post-graduate coursework. Requires at least 3 years in core facility specific applications and at least 2 years of that in research-based technology. Work experience in multi-user core facility preferred. Core or technology specific licensure and/or certifications where applicable. Additionally yearly certificate and compliance training if required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with fresh and preserved human tissue.

Experience in cell isolation and cell culture.

Ability to operate vibratome, microtome, and perfusion system.

Immunohistochemistry and/or immunofluorescence experience in staining and data analysis.

Experience in laboratory information management systems, barcoding, and programming language skills.

Ability to work independently, with initiative, manage time and work with minimal supervision to analyze

problems and take appropriate action to complete projects.

Proficiency with statistics commonly applied in bioinformatic, biostatistical, and biomedical research.

Working knowledge of Type 1 diabetes etiology, beta cell function, and histopathology.

High proficiency in MS Office, especially Access and Excel.

Ability to maintain accurate records and inventories.

Ability to work well in a team setting.
