Job Description:

Greenhouse / Shade house: tasks include but are not limited to implement, oversee, and develop light systems, sensors installation and/or troubleshoot/maintenance, irrigation systems, general upkeep, pollinations, data management, and plant population inventory. Implement and/or modify existing protocols for controlling weeds, pruning, fertilizing, and pesticide applications. Data collection and analysis, as well as cultural practices needed to sustain each project.

Plant propagation: Modify existing ways of, processing, packaging, and storing of soilless media, flats, inserts, and containers. Uses prior knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures when planting and transplanting plants in containers, and use of plant growth regulators. (

Fieldwork: Implement, oversee, and develop planting (digging holes and planting plants in the ground), pruning, fertilization, data collection and analysis, irrigation systems, data management, plant population inventory, as well as cultural practices needed to sustain each project. Occasional travel/driving may be necessary for research/extension projects.

Lab work: Study and implement ways to improve preparation of media for tissue culture (TC), explant disinfestation for TC, as well as oversee and develop reagents storage, inventory of chemicals, general housekeeping of tissue culture (TC) laboratory, TC supplies and equipment, TC culture room, cleaning of glassware, data collection and sample analysis.

Program assistance: Including but not limited to conduct literature searches, perform appropriate statistical analysis of data, data entry, data organization, develop written reports as needed, set up or breakdown of extension programs/talks/events, plant label printing, plant label design, printing, make copies, supplies organization, inventory.

Expected Salary:

$45,600.00

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in agricultural science, biology, or a closely related field; or a master’s degree in agricultural science, biology, or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science, biology, or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in ornamental plant production, greenhouse research, and plant tissue culture.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Within 90 days of employment: Florida Public Pesticide Applicator License including subcategories 1) Ornamental and Turf Pest Control and 2) Demonstration and Research.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel) level Basic (user) required.

  • The candidate will apply pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and other chemicals in greenhouse and field settings.

  • The candidate should be able to work outdoors in the heat and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Tissue culture tasks include the handling of extremely hot liquids and glassware, as well as working with equipment that uses steam (autoclave) and the use of sharp objects.

  • Lab tasks include the use of chemicals that could be dangerous if not handled appropriately.

  • Greenhouse work is usually in hot and humid conditions.

  • Fieldwork is outside, usually in hot and sunny conditions.
