Role Overview:

This position functions as the Fort Wayne District CDL Trainer and requires a minimum of 2 years holding a Class A Unrestricted CDL License. The preferred incumbent will be skilled at building relationships with peers, collaboration with others, and providing quality training to a diverse population of students with varied skill sets and learning abilities.

A Day in The Life of a CDL Trainer:

  • Providing classroom training to employees in need of a new/upgraded CDL

  • Providing behind-the-wheel training to employees in need of a new/upgraded CDL

  • Tracking and documenting district-wide CDL training

  • Coordinating behind-the-wheel training for students

  • Coordinating driving test dates for all district CDL students

  • Coordinating with statewide peers to improve the CDL training program and provide updates, as needed

  • Communicating with Supervisors, Managers, and Directors on student progress and program changes

  • This position requires participation in Winter Operations as a snow plow operator

    Salary:

    This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

    CDL Positions:

    Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position.

    This position is located in INDOT’s Fort Wayne District.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Ensures that both INDOT and contractor employees are safely performing work.

  • Supervises assigned INDOT construction technicians.

  • Ensures projects are completed following plans, specifications, and contract requirements as well as on time and budget.

  • Performs sampling and testing of construction materials or coordinates work of assigned technicians.

  • Attends construction status meetings.

  • Provides clarifications as requested by contractors and recommends revisions as needed to meet the project's scope.

  • Reviews working and shop drawing provided by contractors, suppliers, and fabricators.

  • Reviews construction schedules.

  • Prepares inspection reports, progress reports, and other construction records.

  • Reviews and approve daily field reports prepared by assigned technicians.

  • Prepares project-specific responses to injuries from local public officials, news organizations, and other interested parties for the District Communications Director.

  • Meets with property and business owners in the project area to resolve access, drainage, and other issues that may arise during construction.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent, plus 4-5 years of relevant experience required.

  • Advanced knowledge of INDOT Construction principles as demonstrated through successful completion of the Construction and Testing Highway Technician Program (CTHTP) is strongly preferred.

  • Equivalent post-secondary education/training in a Construction or Construction Management related field along with substantial professional experience may substitute for the CTHTP.

  • Demonstrated previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role highly preferred.

  • Broad knowledge in construction material sampling and testing standards: and FHWA and INDOT test procedures of materials.

  • Ability to read and interpret highway and bridge plans and to identify errors and omissions.

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Offices software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, the public, contractors, consultants, and other Department sections both orally and in writing.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Must have a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or the ability to obtain it within 90 days.

  • Required to submit to, and pass, a drug test as a condition of employment.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
