Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology ( MIP ) Department is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.

Position Summary

We are seeking an outstanding post-doctoral fellow interested in in-depth immunologic analyses of tissue-specific and systemic responses in small animals, to identify the key immune responses needed for protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis; and immunologic targets that can be used to improve TB vaccine strategies. These studies involve animal infections with M. tuberculosis and non tuberculous mycobacteria, animal necropsies, cell isolation, cell staining, flow cytometry, histopathology, in-situ hybridization, multiplexed immunohistochemistry and advanced computational analysis of immunological and sequencing data. Additionally, the candidate will be working inside the BSL -3, analyzing data, and contributing to writing manuscripts.

The successful candidate will report to Dr. Marcela Henao-Tamayo and Dr. Andres Obregon. This position will be assigned to the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a PhD, MD/PhD, PharmD/PhD or DVM /PhD in the areas of Immunology, pathology, mycobacteriology or molecular biology.

  • The successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and communication skills, knowledge of standard computer applications, and the ability to work productively as a member of a large and diverse research team.

  • Experience handling and manipulating small animal models.

  • Experience with immunological methods, including flow cytometry.

  • Experience with animal necropsy and tissue handling.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, M. avium or M. abscessus, flow cytometry, pathology and histopathology, development of tissue based methods for immune cell identification, cellular immunology and animal handling skills for both mouse and guinea pig.

  • BSL -3 experience is highly desirable. Experience with computational applications such “R” or “Python” is desirable along with experience in sequencing data analysis.

  • Manuscript writing experience proven by publications.

m. Work closely under supervision to implement research projects that further the understanding and development of effective vaccines

n. Committed participation as a team member to support experimental design

o. Developing immunoassay methodology following scientific literature review, quality standards, and discussion with peers, as required

p. Responsible for following Standard Operating Procedures

q. Records procedures, outcomes, and observations in lab notebook following established guidelines

r. Utilize established mathematical and scientific techniques to compile, critically analyze, and interpret data

s. Proficiency in MS Office, scientific data/graphics programs, flow cytometry software, biostatistics, and R programming

t. Communicate with research management regularly

u. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

v. Presents research to the group and internal/external scientific meetings

w. Contributes to maintenance of the sample repository including sample tracking procedures
