The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking Motor Equipment Operator to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. Under general supervision, operates special truck-mounted equipment or light motorized equipment in a variety of construction and/or maintenance work and performs related work as required. The incumbent is primarily responsible for operating equipment, including but not limited to: a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, skid loader with attachments, mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment. In addition to equipment operation, the position is required to haul all CDL required truck and trailer combinations with equipment and materials. In addition to working with a crew, this position may be dispatched individually for certain assignments. Completes a variety of tasks associated with mowing and grounds/park maintenance. Completes repairs and maintenance of park facilities, playground equipment, picnic areas, walkways, trails, fencing, signs, and other park amenities. Responsible for the mowing and maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and trails. Serves as subject matter expert on safety requirements for equipment operation and maintenance procedures. Uses gas-powered equipment including string trimmer, chain saw, blowers, hedgers, etc. Inspects and drives a truck and trailer, and hauls equipment and material to various job sites. Informs supervisors of conditions requiring special attention. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order. Completes required documentation and daily work reports.

Note: Reports each morning to Burke Lake Park, 10401 Burke Lake Road, Fairfax Station and is dispatched to assigned parks. In addition to hauling and equipment operation, this position is part of the overall labor team.

Work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with overtime required when necessary. Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Positions are subject to transfer to other maintenance operation locations. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position. Position is Emergency Service Personnel.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in a position that requires a Commercial Driver’s License after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid class A CDL with air brakes at time of application submission to be eligible. Employees must sign an agreement with the hiring department and the Department of Human Resources to stay with the hiring department for a designated period of time.

Illustrative Duties

  • Operates single-axle dump trucks and small trailers in the loading, unloading, and

  • transportation of small motor equipment;

  • Operates various small equipment such as tampers, chain saws, concrete saws, etc.;

  • Performs maintenance on medium/small equipment and vehicles (such as checking and adding fuel, water, oil and air; checking the brakes and cleaning vehicles);

  • May perform a variety of laborer tasks, such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, brush removal, asphalt leveling and raking, lifting, pushing, and other physical work;

  • Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when working near equipment;

  • May lead a small crew of laborers;

  • Effectively communicates with employees, supervisors and customers;

  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;

  • Reports unsafe working conditions;

  • Complies with safety competencies.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations;

  • Working knowledge of general maintenance of light motorized equipment;

  • Working knowledge of computers:

  • Ability to perform light maintenance on this equipment;

  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;

  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;

  • Ability to maintain effective relationship with customers, employees and supervisors;

  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;

  • Ability to lead the work of others.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to:

Completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two years of experience in maintenance, construction or related field;

  • At least three years of experience in the operation of grounds equipment such as: skid-steers with attachments, tractor with attachments and various, riding mowers;

  • At least two years of experience with small equipment such as: chainsaws, weed-trimmers, edgers, blowers, walk-behind mowers;

  • At least three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of outdoor maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors and landscape equipment;

  • Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Combination with Air Brakes;

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Driver's license (required)

  • Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Combination with Air Brakes required within 12 months of hire.

  • Class A CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit) (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 50 pounds up to 75 pounds with assistance. Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment and truck/trailer. Ability to use hand/power tools. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
