Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. The Building Division of Fairfax County is currently seeking to fill a Plumbing Plan Review Engineer III - position by highly qualified and competent candidate.

  • This is a senior position requiring review of complex building plans under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Building Trades Division. Reviews complex building designs in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), Virginia Plumbing Code (VPC).

  • Communicates design deficiencies, code requirements and engineering principles to project stakeholders, design team and contractors.

  • Communicates with architects, engineers, contractors and other stakeholders to provide code compliant structures.

  • Performs research, provides training, interprets code provisions and offers resolution to design and construction challenges.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to further the goals and objectives of the agency.

  • Complies with county, agency, and job specific training requirements, including but not limited to emergency management and safety-related courses.

  • Attends pre- and post-submission meetings, coordinates with county-assigned project managers and peer reviewers.

  • Complies with established LDS’s safety program and guidelines.

Employment Standards

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hr/equivalencies-education-and-experience) (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class may require specific certification(s) prior to employment and/or the ability to acquire necessary certification(s) within a specified time period following employment. The certifications are identified in the position description and employment advertisement.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Driver's license

  • Plumbing Plans Examiner -Required within 18 months

  • Electrical Plans Examiner or Mechanical Plans Examiner-Required within 36 months

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience in the review of complex plumbing plans for commercial buildings and compliance with the Virginia Plumbing Codes (VPC).

  • Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, building codes and construction practices in order to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Working knowledge of American Society of Plumbing Engineer (ASPE) codes and Plumbing and Drainage Institute (PDI) codes.

  • Experience of electronic plan review and use of a plan review management software.

  • Experience in design/construction of plumbing in commercial projects.

  • Experience working in Land Development processes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to communicate with customers and attend meetings. Ability to lift and move items up to 50 lbs. from one location to another. Ability to operate key-board driven equipment. Ability to perform sedentary tasks for extended periods. Ability to review plans on desk, on computer screen, for long hours. Sufficient mobility to perform on-site building inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
