Unilever Senior Packaging Engineer in El Segundo, California

As a Sr. Packaging Engineer, you will have a key role in the creation, design, and execution of innovation and portfolio management across Murad’s diverse line of products. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including but not limited to creative, marketing, product development, engineering, regulatory, and R&D, to ensure the successful launch of innovative and brand-identifiable packs. Your attention to detail, creativity, project management skills, and industry knowledge will contribute to enhancing the overall customer experience and brand image.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Execute the development and qualification of a wide range of primary, secondary & tertiary packaging solutions that meet the needs of brand aesthetics, consumer use, manufacturing capability, quality, and cost.
Support the ideation, development, feasibility, and implementation of new and improved packages and processes including stock packaging, engineering specifications, functionality, and quality testing.
Support Operations cost savings and efficiency initiatives, and quality investigations towards continuous improvement.
Partner with Project Management on managing technical milestones
Partner with Quality Assurance on troubleshooting technical issues (supplier, plant, distribution, quality, etc.)
Execute carton, kit & set packaging development with minimal input from leadership.
Share and escalate roadblocks cross-functionally
Create package component specifications, Bills of Materials, and Fill & Assembly specifications
Collaborate with Marketing and Design on establishing feasibility for new packaging initiatives/concepts
Review and approve artwork for new/maintenance SKUs
Ensure colors of packaging components meet Design and Marketing expectations and are within molding and decorating process constraints
Partner with Quality Assurance on package testing procedures and standards to support the effective design, validation, and implementation of new packages and packaging technology
Coordinate line trials to ensure package performance for manufacturing.
Attend component and manufacturing startups as needed to ensure proper execution of design & function.
Support and drive engineering change initiatives.
Drive sustainability initiatives through partnership with packaging regulatory initiatives.
Support and drive packaging consumer complaints and non-conformities to completion
Contribute to organizational development through the implementation of new processes and systems.
Manage partnerships and maintain communication with external suppliers and manufacturers.
Research new or emerging packaging trends and technologies.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
B.S. Degree in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field of engineering or science
3+ years of work experience in Package Engineering (Cosmetic Industry preferred)
Strong communication skills (oral and written) and great attention to detail
Ability to work and collaborate with multiple departments
Familiarity with packaging systems – such as airless pumps, jars, dropper bottles, tubes, vials, cartridges, pouches, foil packs, sachets, blisters, applicators, etc. – as well as related secondary and tertiary systems
Knowledge of packaging material science (e.g., Polymers, metalized film, corrugate, cartons, etc.), pallet load software and theory (e.g., TOPs or CAPE)
Experience in document control and statistical sampling
Experience working with industrial and graphic design teams is a plus
Interest and/or Experience in the areas of package sustainability is highly desired

This position is based in our El Segundo, CA headquarters, which is currently 40% hybrid onsite/remote work.
The expected base salary for this position is $110,000 to $120,000. The exact base salary is determined by various factors including experience, skills, education, geographic location, and budget. This position is also eligible for participation in the company discretionary bonus plan, based on personal performance and company results.
