Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Directs shift specific Respiratory Care Practitioners in their daily assignments. Is proactive in reviewing shift schedule in advance to plan and provide shift coverage for days with below minimum staffing levels. Monitors appropriateness of therapy and quality of patient care provided by the RCP’s throughout the shift. Ensures all orders are reviewed by staff. Provides ongoing education of staff in all areas of basic therapy, and performs specialized training in critical care areas. Provides counseling, and informs Clinical Coordinator of disciplinary actions taken. Assists therapists in providing coverage for all critical care areas, and provision of floor therapy as needed on a daily basis. Supervisors are expected to use all of these abilities to act as a resource of guidance and decision maker for their respective shift staff members. Facilitates interdisciplinary/interdepartmental communication.

POPULATION SERVED:

All employees, staff of DSMC in both clinical and non-clinical departments, including patient/families, physicians, volunteers, agency, contract, students and the community served.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Uses thorough knowledge and understanding of all physiological and mechanical aspects of Respiratory Care to insure quality of services provided by staff.

  • Practices, develops and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers.

  • Adjust assignments daily as needed.

  • Provides routine floor, adult and neonatal critical care therapy as needed.

  • Monitors patient quality of care, and appropriateness of therapy.

  • Performs all staff evaluations in a timely and organized fashion within the designated time frame assigned by Director, and actively participates in counseling sessions and pursuing disciplinary action when and if necessary.

  • Assists Department Director in developing department policies and procedures pertinent to new therapy processes.

  • Attends 100 % of department meetings to improve communication between nursing and ancillary services.

What qualifications you will need:

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Texas License for Respiratory Care Practitioner required.

  • Current BCLS certification required.

  • Current STABLE, NRP, ACLS, PALS certification required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree Applied Science

  • Minimum of three years clinical experience in acute Respiratory Care required.

  • Minimum of 6 months NICU and/or PICU experience required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • RRT Credential preferred. CRT in lieu of RRT credential will be considered.

  • 1 year previous supervisory or relief supervisory experience preferred.
