Scope of Job

Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research and/or teaching. Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.

Description of Duties

The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:

  • Develops, tests, and analyzes research data for projects based on application expertise and interest.

  • Writes narrative summaries of the research results and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned.

  • Conducts background research.

  • Develops and implements an evaluation plan and prepares progress reports as needed.

  • Studies, tests, and maintains accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies.

  • Designs and implements training activities as required.

  • Teaches one to two courses per semester in conjunction with faculty member, if assigned.

  • Publishes in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities assigned.

  • Writes grant proposals for competitive funding agencies or organizations

  • Works in the field gathering data -e.g., distributional data, measurements, species samples.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education

Doctoral degree in Biology, Ecology, or similar fields from an accredited University (based on funding restrictions degree may need to have been conferred within a set period of time previous to assuming position).

Licenses/Certifications

None.

Required Experience

  • Experience in writing grant applications and working with machine learning approaches such as MaxEnt, random forest, neural network.

  • Experience using Geographical Information Systems and ecological niche modeling to predict species distributions.

  • Experience with any of these topics: endangered species, invasive species, vector-borne diseases species (mosquitoes, kissing bugs, ticks), and habitat restoration.

  • Experience working in the field gathering data of living organisms, e.g., plants, animals, insects.

  • Experience in writing and publishing scientific papers.

  • Experience working in teams and/or local communities.

Preferred Experience

Fluent communication in both English and Spanish.

Equipment

Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley
