University Medicine Licensed Practical Nurse - Endocrinology per diem in East Providence, Rhode Island

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently applies the Brown Medicine values of patient care priority, dignity, collaboration, integrity and quality in support of the Brown Medicine mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient care, research excellence and outstanding physician education. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the Brown Medicine Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

  • Assist the registered nurse, nurse practitioner and physician to provide care for patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders; acts as an advocate in the coordination of patient care.

  • Deliver direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process in both face-to-face and telephone encounters.

  • Demonstrate performance, understanding, and interpretation of diagnostic measures such as lab tests, radiology exams, blood glucose readings, etc.

  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of patient care including hospitalization, outpatient visits, procedures, tests and treatments. Work with the endocrine care team to complete prior authorization for various endocrine tests and treatments.

  • Perform technical and specialized skills related to diabetes and endocrine care such as meter and pump downloads, stimulation and suppression testing, injections, etc.

  • Prepare rooms, equipment and supplies to accommodate the patient load.

  • Assist physicians, nurse practitioner and registered nurse with procedures.

  • Monitor patient before, during and after procedure. Apply appropriate monitoring equipment.

  • Administer medications as directed by the physician under the guidelines of the Rhode Island State Board of Nursing.

  • Provide patient education.

  • Document on all forms as required.

  • Utilize supplies, equipment and resources to contains costs without compromising delivery of care

  • Implement infection prevention measures and environmental safety.

  • Safety practices as demonstrated through room preparation and high-level disinfection practices.

  • Report and document information accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Communicate a positive and caring attitude towards patient, physicians, staff, and all other contacts.

  • Seek guidance, direction and assistance where needed. Follow policy and procedures and be an active participant in quality programs.

  • Maintain confidentiality/privacy/security of all patients and communications/documents.

  • Gain knowledge of all equipment and supplies and is familiar with their location, especially emergency drugs, supplies and equipment.

  • Participate in staff meetings, and In-services (mandatory and regular).

  • Demonstrate flexibility in patient care, assignment, schedule and needs of BMEC.

  • Supervise employees with lesser qualifications and delegate duties to them according to qualifications, skills, education and competency.

  • Maintain a clean, pleasant and safe environment for self/other employees and patients/visitors.

  • Participate in continuing education programs.

  • Participate on committees as assigned

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to maintain open and positive communication with other health professionals, patients and families.

  • Exhibit professionalism always.

  • Adhere to HIPAA to maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel information.

  • Good command of the English language, both verbal and written.

  • Strong clinical skills specific to endocrinology.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of a Professional School of Nursing; LPN.

  • State Licensure as an LPN with previous experience in endocrinology/diabetes preferred.

  • Current certification in BLS.

  • Evidence of continuing education.
