Hiring Range: $21.00 - $22.95
Hours: 8:00am - 4:30pm
This Intern position will support the Public Works Department’s (Stormwater Services Division) communications efforts to the public. The position will provide field and office support on a strategic communication campaign and will design and execute a summer stormwater social media campaign while supporting the Division’s communications goals. The internship will start in May 2025 and extend to July for a total period of 10 weeks. The position will require 30 hours per week.
Duties/Responsibilities
Supporting a strategic communications campaign. Includes creating a communications plan, developing content and copy, and performing community outreach where appropriate. Work will also include creating a separate social media campaign for the duration of the internship and creating content to serve the communications efforts of the Division. Deliverables for this project will be: a communications plan, webpage(s), social media content, public presentations, and a content library.
Essential duties for this position include:
Content creation using Canva or a similar platform.
Webpage design.
Public outreach at festivals and events.
Training specific business sectors on best pollution prevention practices.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
This position requires coursework matching that of a rising senior within the Departments of Interdisciplinary Studies, Communication Arts Concentration; Mass Communications, Media Studies Concentration; or English, Writing Concentration. This includes:
Completion of English Composition I and II with a C-grade or better.
Completion of four of the following courses, or equivalents, with a C-grade or better.
Elements of Speech Communication
Introduction to Technical Writing
Reporting and Writing for Mass Media
Introduction to Multimedia Reporting
Professional and Technical Writing
Writing for Digital Media
Public Issues Reporting
Additional Preferred Skills
Project experience with webpage development.
Proficient with social media content creation through Canva or a similar platform.
Familiar with environmentally-focused science communications practices.
Proficient in Spanish.
