General Summary:
The Paving Superintendent manages multiple paving projects, coordinates labor and equipment to construct projects, schedules subcontractors and material suppliers, manages and supervises employees on assigned projects, and tracks and reports materials, schedules, coordinates, and communicates with customers and internal employees. The incumbent supervises, manages and directs the selection, training, development, and appraisal of its own employees.
The individual will practice absolute confidentiality, good judgment, and common sense in all duties and any other tasks as assigned. Normal work hours are day or night shift eight (8) to fourteen (14) hour days Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be required depending on the contract. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Complies with all safety policies, procedures, and established safe practices and ensures that all direct reports do the same. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or the Manager Safety and Health
Trains, develops, and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of own employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders, and disciplinary action if necessary
Follows all requirements listed in the Supervisor Safety Procedures Manual (SSPM) including, but not limited to, safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting and investigation, and employee observations
Ensures compliance of production staff with all policies and procedures, OSHA, MSHA, and NCDOT guidelines
Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22
Manages paving crew, various subcontractors, and paving equipment
Coordinate material delivery with asphalt plants
Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Basic personal computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks and projects simultaneously
Prioritizes, organizes, and delegates assignments
Education and/or Experience:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent in a related field from a two-year college or technical school preferred. Six (6) or more years of related experience required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Current North Carolina Driver’s License required
Quality Management System Level 1 Roadway Certification required
