Job Information

Actalent Animal Technician in Durham, North Carolina

Description:

Candidates MUST be comfortable with breeding animals for research, and euthanasia. CMS I candidates provide husbandry to laboratory animals, maintain animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records, and perform facility sanitation in animal facilities. Work schedules are assigned by the Facility Manager or his/her designee for that specific animal facility. This position requires weekend and holiday work hours and involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products. Candidates will spend the majority of their time working within animal modules - rooms housing animals/cages. Candidates will primarily be responsible for maintaining cleanliness of animals' habitat (cages), and following strict protocols to ensure animals are available for research.

Hours

Monday-Friday from 7:00a-3:30p

Weekends required every 6-8 weeks (candidates MUST be open to working weekends every 6-8 weeks)

Opportunity

5-month contract to hire

Progressions

New Hires typically go through the following progression at DLAR:

• Cage Wash rotation for 1-3 months to learn foundation and workflow (depends on building)

• Next working with a dedicated trainer for 2-3 weeks to learn protocols and SOPs

• Next working with a CMS III in the animal rooms for hands on experience

• Then typically folks go perm and have 18 months to get certified. DLAR provides incentives like the books and means to study for the certification test, as well.

Career Path

• The CMS position is a great foundation to lab animal research and opens you up to many pathways at Duke.

• If you enjoy working in husbandry, there is an 4-level career ladder at DLAR; there are fewer opportunities as you move up the ladder, but for someone who wants a career in animal husbandry we definitely have a path available for them to follow.

• If husbandry isn’t what someone wants to do long-term, we have developed other paths within DLAR: CMS staff have left the husbandry team over the past few years to work in our veterinary diagnostic lab, on our technical services team, to work on the rodent health team, and to work in our breeding core.

• All of these opportunities open up different paths to follow that could lead to additional growth at DLAR and give our staff greater exposure to the research labs at Duke.

• This exposure can also lead a staff member down different paths outside of DLAR, but still within the Duke research community.
