GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Director of Secondary Education is a highly competent, motivated, transformational leader who works collaboratively with District and school leaders to provide strategic direction and oversight for all Secondary School programs and serves as the Secondary School Principal. The Director oversees and evaluates the work of House/Assistant Principals and Deans of Student Discipline. The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of Leadership and Human Resources.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

School Climate and Culture

  • Provides visionary leadership for secondary education initiatives, fostering a culture of excellence, equity, and inclusivity;

  • Collaborates with school administrators, District administrators, and other stakeholders to establish clear goals and priorities for secondary education;

  • Distributes leadership across the school to create and clearly communicate a school improvement plan to attain desired results for all students;

  • Utilizes shared decision making to maintain positive morale, inclusive of trust, honesty, and credibility;

  • Develops and relies on the expertise of teacher leaders to improve school effectiveness;

  • Creates and fosters opportunities for teachers to positively collaborate;

  • Serves as participatory learner with faculty and staff to demonstrate continuous improvement of professional knowledge and skills;

  • Fosters a positive school climate where student discipline concerns are addressed in a manner that promotes student responsibility and mutual respect by school administrators and school staff;

  • Uses knowledge of the social, cultural, leadership, and political dynamics of the school community to build affirmative relationships that cultivate a healthy learning environment;

  • Exhibits strategies that promote the understanding, sensitivity, and respect of multicultural and ethnic diversity; and

  • Develops, implements, and regularly reviews plans that manage conflict, safety, and crisis situations in an effective and timely manner.

Student Support Services

  • Collaborates with school counselors, psychologists, and other support staff to ensure the academic, social, and emotional needs of students are addressed effectively;

  • Develops and implements programs to support student transition between grade levels, including orientation activities and academic planning; and

  • Monitors student attendance, behavior, and academic progress, intervening when necessary to provide additional support or resources.

Communication and Community Relations

  • Works effectively with parents/guardians, community, business, and government representatives to pursue shared goals and incorporate their views in shared decision-making processes;

  • Responds to requests, complaints, and grievances;

  • Debriefs with the school community following high profile incidents; and

  • Conducts department, committee, and faculty meetings.

Instructional Leadership

  • Possesses deep knowledge of curricula and best instructional practices;

  • Monitors the implementation of standards-based instruction;

  • Uses student progress data to influence instructional decisions in the classroom;

  • Works collaboratively with District and school administrators, staff, and other stakeholders to:

  • influence the decision making to ensure that the curriculum is rigorous, diverse, and meets the needs of all students, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners;

  • ensure that District initiatives are being implemented with fidelity in classrooms throughout the school;

  • influence the decision making for professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance instructional practices, curriculum implementation, and student engagement;

  • ensure that curriculum and instructional practices for Secondary Alternative Education is tailored to meet the diverse needs of the students in the program; and

  • influence establishment of and fidelity to processes for administrators and faculty to actively collect and analyze student data to determine school effectiveness.

Human Resources Administration

  • Ensures adherence to legal concepts, state, and federal regulations, and Board of Education policies;

  • Ensures adherence to established, clear performance standards upon which the Annual Professional Performance Review is based, builds well-defined and consistent procedural guidelines and safeguards for all evaluation procedures, and establishes a realistic evaluation timeline that ensures quality evaluations are completed;

  • Actively participates in the selection of quality, committed, and capable faculty and staff using research-based interviewing practices as established by Human Resources;

  • Develops and provides the support structures for mentoring programs in which new teachers grow personally and professionally;

  • Provides opportunities for new teachers to collaborate with highly effective teachers;

  • Recognizes faculty and staff strengths, providing specific commendations; and

  • Recognizes faculty and staff challenges, providing recommendations for improvements to be realized with clear descriptions of areas to be improved and the expectations for performance improvements.

Budget and Resource Management

  • Develops and manages the budget for secondary education programs and initiatives, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with District priorities;

  • Allocates resources effectively to support instructional materials, professional development, technology, and other needs identified by schools and departments; and

  • Seeks external funding opportunities and grants to supplement District resources and expand educational offerings for secondary students.

Research and Innovation

  • Implements research-based, adopted District initiatives;

  • Remains informed of current research, trends, and best practices in secondary education, incorporating evidence-based strategies into curriculum and instructional design; and

  • Participates in professional organizations, conferences, and networks to share knowledge, contribute to the field, and remain connected with educational leaders statewide and nationally.

Policy and Compliance

  • Remains informed about federal, state, and local education policies, regulations, and mandates relevant to secondary education;

  • Ensures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to curriculum, assessment, student services, and reporting; and

  • Advises District leadership on policy implications and advocates for changes that support the needs of secondary students and educators.

Organizational Management

  • Submits accurate, required reports in a timely manner;

  • Collaboratively organizes the development of the school master schedule for faculty, staff, and students;

  • Provides and reinforces clear structures, rules, and procedures for faculty, staff, and students;

  • Maintains appropriate record keeping systems;

  • Supervises maintenance of student enrollment, attendance, and cumulative records;

  • Makes creative use of all resources, including people, time, and money, to improve teaching and learning;

  • Provides for the purchase, receipt, distribution, storage, care, repair, and inventory of school building supplies, materials, and equipment; and

  • Orders New York State Assessments.

Secondary Alternative Education

  • Coordinates, monitors and evaluates the Secondary Alternative Education Program:

  • Implements and continually improves secondary alternative education programming tailored to meet the diverse needs of students in grades 7-12;

  • Establishes policies and procedures to ensure program effectiveness and compliance with educational standards;

  • Provides guidance and support to faculty and staff to assist them to overcome academic, behavioral, and social-emotional challenges;

  • Collaborates with faculty to develop individualized support plans, monitor student progress, and address barriers to learning;

  • Oversees the hiring and training of qualified faculty and staff who are passionate about working with at-risk and marginalized students; and

  • Provides ongoing professional development opportunities to ensure that educators are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively engage and support students in alternative education settings.

Other

  • Attends meetings of the Board of Education, as directed by the Superintendent of Schools; and

  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities, as assigned by the Executive Director of Leadership and Human Resources or the Superintendent of Schools.
