JOB SUMMARY:

Work is performed in accordance with the U.S. Constitution, Arizona Constitution, Arizona Revised Statutes, City Ordinance, and Department Manual. Responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, crime investigation, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of state laws and municipal ordinances. Serves in leadership role. Work may involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Work methods and results are checked by superior officers through personal inspections, review of reports and discussions. The School Safety Officer shall be a uniformed officer and conduct highly responsible law enforcement work under general direction to create and maintain a safe, secure and orderly learning environment for students, staff and patrons. Foster an efficient and cohesive program that will build a positive relationship between law enforcement officers and the youth of the community in addition to reducing crime committed by juveniles and young adults. The School Safety Officer addresses security violations in accordance with prescribed policies, and procedures is responsible for reporting illegal activities to appropriate administration and enforcement entities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interested persons must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 21 yrs. of age
  • Possess an H.S. diploma or GED
  • A valid AZ drivers license
  • Possess a Peace Officer Certification by AZ. P.O.S.T., and three years experience as a Police Officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (May not include all of the duties, nor do the listed examples include all tasks, which may be found in positions of this class.)

Teaches school curriculum for Law-Related Education and Safety, assuring for professionalism and thoroughness.

Occasionally, provides field training on all specific police processes and activities for patrol officers assuring for professionalism.

As assigned, patrols entire City (all zones), monitors and responds to radio messages regarding issues that may require supervisory attention. Upon arrival at scene, makes determination to intercede to assure that proper procedures are being followed.

Makes determination to remain on site and act as backup or to departs for routine patrol activities.

Responds to announced incident and decides regarding the emergency or non-emergency nature of incident. Coordinates with other units if needed.

Responds appropriately. Takes appropriate enforcement or control action as required assuring that department and school procedures are followed and that safety is prioritized.

Completes investigation and makes determination regarding enforcement action required; completes reports and documentation as required assuring for timeliness and accuracy.

Provides for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. If needed, makes arrest, handles prisoners assuring for officer and public safety, and assuring that department procedures are followed.

Conducts and completes any required follow-up activities, assuring for accuracy and thoroughness.

Patrols assigned area. Investigates offenses and any suspicious conditions, makes arrests, recovers property, transports prisoners to appropriates facilities, and makes out proper reports; testifies in court as required.

Enforces traffic and parking regulations, directs traffic, investigates and prepares reports of traffic accidents and incidents.

Patrols the City to prevent crime and initiates contact with individuals who are engaging in criminal activity or safety or traffic hazards that arise.

Administers appropriate first aid as required.

Searches for subjects with warrants and makes arrests if needed, assuring for safety, policy and procedure compliance and thoroughness.

Responds to requests for assistance from other agencies assuring for professionalism and for adherence to school and department policies and procedures.

Maintains and safeguards vehicles and other department issued supplies and equipment.

Provides information, makes presentations as required assuring for professionalism.

Attends extracurricular activities at the schools in support of students and helps ensures their safety during events.

Assists with the development of the school crisis plans.

Makes arrests restraining suspects through the proper level and applications of use of force, control holds, and restraint devices.

Interviews witnesses and interrogates suspects.

Provides victims rights information to victims of crime and/or referrals to other community organizations for assistance.

Enhances community relations.
