JOB SUMMARY:

  • This is a non-sworn position intended for high school graduates who are interested in a law enforcement career, but do not meet the minimum requirements for appointment due to age, with preference given to the student who is enrolled in a criminal justice program or related field at an accredited college or university.
  • The Police Trainee may remain in the program until his/her eligibility for appointment as a sworn officer having gained at least one year of knowledge and experience ahead of his/her attendance at the police academy in addition to potentially receiving an associate degree in criminal justice or related field.
  • Under close supervision, the Police Trainee performs a variety of civilian field and office law enforcement work in direct support of sworn personnel and professional staff.
  • Work is performed both in the office and in the field.
  • Work methods and results are checked by first line supervisors through personal inspections, review of reports and discussions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum age: 17;
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
  • valid Class G (unrestricted) or Class D Driver License.
  • Applicants must meet and maintain AZPOST minimum requirements for appointment as a police officer at the time of employment: U.S. Citizen, ability to pass an extensive background, polygraph and psychological exams, physical agility, and be 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the academy.

Special Requirements:

  • Certification in CPR/First Aid within a reasonable time after hire date.
  • Adherence to Department and ACJIS policies regarding confidential and sensitive information.
  • Receive a minimum rating of meets job requirements for performance criteria on annual evaluations.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in crime investigations by:
    • Interviewing involved parties, witnesses, and neighbors
    • Issuing Victims Rights Notices
    • Performing crime scene investigation dusting for fingerprints, taking photographs, collecting items of evidence, completing crime scene logs
    • Preparing supplemental reports
  • Responds to traffic collisions:
    • Securing the scene - ensuring for the safety of involved occupants and first responders
    • Summoning Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and rendering first aid
    • Taking photographs
    • Recording driver and vehicle information into the Arizona Traffic Accident Report (ATAR)
    • Completing vehicle inventories for vehicles subject to police impound
    • Assisting investigating officers with scene measurements or scene diagram
  • Provides customer service by:
    • Answering the telephone, entering call information into Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
    • Transferring calls to staff and making referrals to community resources
    • Taking fingerprints for pre-employment and background requests
  • Performs work in the field to include:
    • Conducting preliminary criminal investigations for past occurred property crimes such as criminal damage, graffiti, or theft, gathers physical evidence, prepares complete, concise and comprehensive reports, and testifies in court
    • Conducting house checks as requested by residents, checks of vacant houses and business checks
    • Traffic and crowd control during special events and parades
    • Enforcing city ordinances that regulate parking, abandoned vehicles, nuisance properties, and other ordinances in assistance to the City Code Enforcement Officer
    • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City\'s Safety Handbook.
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the City by assuring that all policies, rules and regulations are followed and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors and City staff; enthusiastically promotes the Citys goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • May be assigned to special functions or other duties
