JOB SUMMARY:

  • This work includes fire fighting, fire prevention, communications, and emergency medical assistance.
  • Primary responsibility is for the protection of life and property through fire fighting activities and associated activities.
  • Work requires performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke and cramped surroundings.
  • Employees are required to employ special firefighting skills.
  • A large part of the time is spent in supervised training, in inspection and maintenance of equipment, and in cleaning and maintaining quarters.
  • Employees may be assigned to work on special assignments.
  • Work is normally performed under close supervision in accordance with well defined procedures.
  • Assignments are received from departmental superiors. When assigned to calls involving accidents or to attend to seriously ill persons, the medical duties become the primary responsibility of EMT and Paramedics.
  • EMT personnel will usually operate the ambulance or rescue vehicle and assists Paramedics.
  • Within this class all Firefighters must be certified as a State of Arizona EMT.
  • Also, within this class, Firefighters may be given the opportunity to be selected to attend paramedic training program or other specialized training and schooling.
  • These workers may be designated as Firefighter/Paramedic upon certification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a standard High School, or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain EMT and Firefighter I & II certifications.
  • Valid Arizona Drivers License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must obtain State of AZ hazardous materials certification at the operation level.
  • Paramedics must maintain medic certification to continue function in this classification.
  • If certification is not maintained, incumbent must revert to a mandatory maintenance of an EMT Certification.
  • Must pursue continuing education in medical specialties required by the State and Base Hospital.
  • Must obtain an appropriate Arizona Drivers License to operate any vehicle used on the job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (May not include all of the duties, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in position of this class.)

  • Responds to fire alarms with a company; lays and connects hose; holds nozzles and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders, uses SCBA, extinguishers, and other assorted equipment.
  • Participates in company and continuing Education Programs as available and required.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the fire department property; cleans and washes walls and floors; makes minor repairs, washes, hangs and dries hoses; washes, cleans, and polishes apparatus.
  • As a Company Member assist in the inspection of commercial buildings and other premises to discover and eliminate potential fire hazards.
  • May be assigned to operate fire apparatus or assume the duties of Engineer after trained.
  • Responds to all calls for assistance as required regardless of the nature.
  • As an EMT, works with and assists paramedic personnel in the Deployment and use of specialized medical equipment.
  • EMT personnel performs duties to the extent training and certification allows
  • As a Paramedic, performs medical procedures as required to stabilize patient for safe Transportation to a medical facility.
  • Contacts Base Hospital by phone during or after a transport as required by state or Base Hospital protocol.
  • Performs liaison work with agencies to coordinate desired results as assigned by the Fi e Chief.
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the City by assuring that all policies, rules and regulations are followed and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City\'s Safety Handbook.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors and City staff; enthusiastically promotes the Citys goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
