DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Why work at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel? There is a whole world hidden in the mountain and three stories above the highway. You will assist during emergencies, observe traffic through the cameras in the control room, notify the traveling public of hazards and adverse weather conditions, enforce vehicle weight/height restrictions, and so much more. With an average of 30-40,000 vehicles traveling through the tunnel every day, something new always happens and employees find the work to be interesting and challenging.

About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation has an opening for a Control Room Operator/Supervisor at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel located in Dillon, CO. The Control Room provides support to Tunnel maintenance operations in order to maintain safe travel. This position will ensure that professional standards in communication are implemented and will answer inquiries from internal and external stakeholders regarding CDOT's procedures and road conditions. This position will also monitor cameras, fans, power systems, and specialized systems (e.g. Fixed Fire Suppression System), then evaluate the situations and dispatch CDOT employees and/or notifies outside agencies as each situation warrants. This position is responsible for entering and tracking data, completing work orders, and submitting reports on tunnel operations to management.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Provide technical and administrative support to Tunnel maintenance operations and the safety of traveling public. Work with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public at all times.

Supervise five full-time employees and manage rotating work schedules. Prepare, conduct, and sign performance plans and ratings. Monitor and approve weekly timesheets. Assist with resolving conflicts and personnel issues. Train and coach employees on Control Room operations. Identify concerns and implement changes to Control Room operations to address workflow issues. Constantly monitor over 140 camera screens and continuous flow metering devices. Monitor and operate the power control board, tunnel fans, and fixed fire suppression system. Monitor ameras for over-height vehicles, extra wide/long loads, and for vehicles carrying hazardous materials (HazMat). Process HazMat vehicles when US 6 is closed. Maintain accurate records of all events that occur in or around the tunnel, as well as hourly record keeping of tunnel data. Collect, evaluate, collate, and create reports of tracked data for management. Operate various devices such as VMS boards, Icy Road Control and Chain Law in Effect signs, opens/closes runaway truck ramps, and activates the appropriate chain down stations. Communicate efficiently and effectively via radio and telephone to maintain effective operation of tunnel activities. Remain calm at all times and dispatches qualified CDOT personnel and/or local agencies for emergency situations. Maintain safety consciousness and situational awareness, especially in regard to the traffic in and around the tunnel. Receive and relay emergency information, inquiries and/or questions from CDOT
