Job Description

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks multiple attorneys for the Statewide Prosecutions Section.

Description:

Attorneys in this section primarily handle major offense prosecutions referred from local county attorneys across the State of Iowa. Eighty percent of the criminal cases prosecuted by Statewide Prosecutions are either death or sexual assault cases involving both adult and child victims. Cases referred by local county attorneys are done on either an expertise or conflict basis. Another significant portion of the caseload in Statewide Prosecutions involve sexually violent predator civil commitments filed pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 229A, election misconduct cases filed pursuant to Iowa Code 39A, elder fraud and abuse cases, tax fraud, securities fraud, environmental cases, and judicial qualifications commission investigations and prosecutions. Each Statewide Prosecutor is also expected to conduct various trainings of prosecutors, law enforcement officers, prosecution support staff, and advocates around the state when requested to do so in their area of expertise.

Requirements and Preferences:

Candidates must have a passion for public service and prosecution at the trial level. The most competitive applicants will have excellent courtroom skills, experience trying criminal cases at the local level, a working knowledge of criminal prosecution trial practice, and a willingness to learn and gain experience from their fellow prosecutors. This position requires a license, or the ability to obtain a license, to practice law in Iowa.

Pay and Benefits:

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
