Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities
POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, is currently seeking a talented electrical engineering student for a summer 2025 internship who has an interest in power system planning. This position has the ability to work in a fully remote work-from-home, or if desired, from one of many POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, offices located across the US. The successful applicant will be assisting in performing electrical studies to support electric utilities and/or generator or load developer. Applicable power systems primarily include conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, transmission systems, and distribution systems. Activities will consist of one or more of the following:
Power System Planning Studies: steady-state real and reactive power flow including outage contingencies, generation interconnect feasibility, P-V and Q-V analysis for voltage stability margins, dynamic stability performance, automation of large batch simulations, working with models from NERC regional entities (WECC, MRO, SERC, etc.), NERC compliance, electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling and simulation. Applicable Software: PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSCAD, TARA, Python Scripting, VBA (Visual Basic).
Automation development: develop and update digital tools used in-house by POWER Engineers to assist in engineering production work.
Infrastructure Design studies: substation grounding, corona, and electric and magnetic fields, insulation coordination (lightning, switching surge, and contamination performance), transient (time domain) simulation, power quality (harmonics, voltage flicker, over/under voltage, etc.), motor starting, AC interference (transmission line interaction with railroads and pipelines). Applicable Software: CDEGS, ATP-EMTP, PSCAD.
In addition to working under the guidance of experienced team members, the selected intern will also participate in sessions designed to develop your skills and provide networking opportunities. Those sessions include:
Professional Development sessions focused on resume writing, interview tips, building a LinkedIn profile, and more.
Early Talent Speaker Series where leaders speak to interns about their role, their vision for the company, and their career path, offer career advice, and a Q&A session.
Fun Friday activities where interns company-wide join to network and have some fun while doing it.
Required Education/Experience
Pursuit of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited university
Successful completion of junior-level courses in power system analysis and/or power system protection
The candidate is interested in consulting engineering and the electric utility industry
Candidates must be willing to travel on occasion and work successfully in a customer-focused, project-oriented environment
Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship
Desired Education/Experience
Preference is given to applicants with any of the following: within 1 year of graduation, GPA above 3.3/4.0, power system courses covering topics such as three-phase power, load flow and reactive compensation, protective relaying, symmetrical components, transmission line theory, power system transients, dynamic stability, and power system electromagnetics
Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks
Prior internship and/or power systems-related engineering experience is a plus
Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position

Base Salary Range: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This means that no two candidates are alike.
