    Position Goal

    Provide an auxiliary service that assists transportation department personnel in the overall operation of the district’s transportation system.

    Reports to

    Director of Transportation

    Qualifications

    Education &/or Experience

    High School diploma

    Must hold a valid driver’s license, current DOT physical, class B or higher with school bus air brakes and passenger endorsements, and Iowa School Bus Driver’s permit.

    Must have a strong background in and extensive work experience with vehicle transportation. This includes vehicle operation, design, and mechanical repair.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Ability to work with the administration, teachers, staff, students and parents.

    To act as a liaison between the public and the school, and in so doing promote the general image of the total school system.

    Must be a good organizer of time, allow for schedule changes, adapt to unusual, but necessary requests, and be a self-starter--planning work for any time periods not specifically scheduled.

    Drive morning and evening bus routes, preschool routes, and routes with special needs students.

    Maintains transportation records on activity trips, field trips, and regular routes.

    Assist the Director of Transportation in the recruitment and training of transportation personnel.

    Assist the Director of Transportation in the developing/revising of all bus routes/schedules.

    Assist the Director of Transportation in the scheduling of activity/field trips.

    Keeps supplies and transportation facility in a neat and orderly condition including light cleaning.

    Keeps transportation vehicles in good mechanical condition throughout the year and ready for the semi annual bus inspection.

    Wash transportation vehicles on a regular basis.

    Transport students between buildings as the need arises in both public and parochial schools.

    Assist in the solving of discipline problems occurring on school buses.

    Assist the Director of Transportation and District Mechanic in the selection, ordering, tracking inventory, and delivering of transportation supplies.

    Communication Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate with coworkers in a professional and courteous manner.

    Analytical and Reasoning Skills

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

    Ability to be flexible in coping with any situation that may arise.

    Technology Skills

    Must be able to operate a personal computer and use standard office applications.

    Must be able to use the computer to check email, complete required trainings, and enter time tracking information.

    Physical Demands and Work Environment

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud. Ability to transport special need students.

    Other Duties as Assigned

    Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.

    Salary and benefits to be determined by the Board of Education.

    Evaluation

    Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Transportation Director in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support services personnel.
