Job Description:

This position is located within the Division of Blind Services, Braille & Talking Book Library. The employee must be productive under tight timeframes, balance multiple and competing priorities and maintain goal-directed behavior and performance expectations – sometimes under stressful conditions. The employee must maintain and practice a current understanding of FDOE and DBS policies and guidelines regarding information security. The employee must interact courteously with others. The employee must always promote and demonstrate a positive work environment. The employee’s performance and behavior must demonstrate consideration of the workload concerns of others and must not negatively affect productivity and morale of the unit. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

The incumbent will demonstrate accountability and support towards the goals of the agency leadership and communicate the same to other employees. This includes support to leadership on all program related actions and activities, and as otherwise directed. Model, demonstrate, and guide other employees in the use of the principles of flexibility, adaptability, and approachability - while adhering to applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.

Overall Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work under broad supervision and within time restraints.

  • Will assist customers of the library in the most effective use of the service, always following all safety standards.

  • Will be required to assume responsibility as the staff liaison to share the Bureau’s clientele and works with customers via the telephone, in person and via electronic communications.

  • Utilizes a variety of bibliographic tools including, but not limited to the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS), the Florida Electronic Library, print and online resources from the National Library Service (NLS) of the Library of Congress and print and online resources prepared by the Bureau and network partners across the country.

  • Call new patrons and welcome them to the library.

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with the other Librarian Specialist(s).

  • Works with new applications for service from individual patrons and from the sub-regional libraries and will verify certification and enter all pertinent data into the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS) related to the customer’s service needs and desires and will maintain the Bureau’s paper copy of all certified applications according to the standards of the National Library Service of the Library of Congress and the Information Security Policy of the Division of Blind Services.

  • Assist patrons with requests.

  • The employee may process all patron transfers in and out of the State of Florida for the library.

  • As needed, the employee will be available to assist in public relations, and outreach activities on behalf of the Bureau in working with various organizations.

  • Helps to coordinate the work of volunteers assigned to the Customer Services Section.

  • File applications.

  • Assist the department with projects.

  • Cover other positions as needed.

  • Answer inbound calls to the library.

  • Performs other duties as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of products.

  • Working knowledge of the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS).

  • Ability to understand general working parameters of a library that specializes in blind and visually impaired customers.

  • Work well under tight time restrictions.

  • Ability to communicate successfully both orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of the procedures for classifying, cataloging and using authority files for library materials.

  • Ability to conduct routine bibliographic searches for print or non-print materials.

  • Ability to maintain book collections.

  • Ability to perform acquisitions processes for print or non-print library materials.

  • Ability to assist users in locating and using materials.

  • Ability to perform basic circulation functions according to established procedures.

  • Ability to maintain assigned card catalog or data base collection(s).

  • Ability to edit bibliographic records for format and spelling.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to maintain records.

  • Ability to operate equipment, such as video display terminals and microfiche readers.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
