This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

About the Work Unit This position works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Maintenance Section 6. CDOT maintenance personnel maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation's highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.

About the Position As a field mechanic, you will provide skilled, professional, quality mechanic services for CDOT equipment. This position provides inspection, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and fabrication for all equipment, including but not limited to heavy and specialized equipment, to ensure readiness and operational safety of that equipment on a 24 hour a day, 7 days per week basis in all weather conditions.

This position will be based out of Craig, but will be a field mechanic traveling to the I-70 mountain corridor during the winter season (October through April). Your schedule in these winter months would be Wednesday through Saturday 0600-2:30. When assigned to the I-70 mountain corridor, you would travel in a service truck, travel time would be paid, hotel room will be provided, and you will receive per diem.

CDOT provides tools for mechanics.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform mechanical repairs in the field shops; repair, inspect, diagnose, and maintain heavy and specialized equipment such as loaders, dozers, motor graders, lay down machines and all other asphalt equipment, snow removal equipment, mowers, and construction equipment; Travel to remote locations along the side of the road, often in adverse weather and road conditions, to diagnose and perform all mechanical repairs on CDOT equipment; maintain and perform work out of a service road truck; repair heavy equipment, trucks, loaders, dozers, road graders, etc.; perform electrical trouble shooting and quick on-the-spot repairs including welding and fabrication on the roadside; Inspect, diagnose and repair equipment and components, including electronic controlled equipment components; use scan tools and diagnostic equipment; read error messages and codes; gather information from operators on equipment prob ems; Disassemble units, inspect composites and analyze failures, replace failed parts, and properly reassemble units in the following systems: brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension, engines, computer controlled sanders and liquid de-icing systems, AVL systems, etc. Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional; prepare work orders and cost estimates using SAP and other software; code invoices to proper cost center, work order, and material group; Maintain records and create reports pertaining to repair and maintenance of equipment; Accurately report work activities, time spent, location, equipment used, materials, personnel involved, etc. on work orders; Complete personal fuel log for fuel purchases; Review and process equipment notifications and annual and emissions inspections; Design and fabricate special tools, parts, and attachments for equipment and equipment repair and for maintenance patrols; use arc welding, oxygen-acetylene cutting and welding, plasma cutter, MIG and TIG, mills, lathes, metal cutting saws, etc.; Set up and install new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT
