Provides manually machined precision parts and systems for the academic departments of the Natural Sciences Division; instructs students and faculty on machine shop use and design, teaches PC108 Machining and Fabrication adjunct course; acts as consultant during various stages of projects, maintains and repairs instructional and laboratory equipment and apparatus for all science labs.
Responsibilities
Produce manually machined precision custom parts; construct systems of purchased and/or locally fabricated parts and visualize successful interconnections without the aid of highly detailed engineering drawings.
Produce technical drawings based on faculty requests, and help faculty and students learn to develop drawings on their own.
Serve as instructor for adjunct Physics class PC108 Machining and Fabrication (.5 credit) and supervise student project work over the course of the semester.
Teach students and faculty who need to use shop equipment to learn shop skills and safety procedures and participate in shop activities.
Collaborate with faculty and students on projects related to their research, regardless of their field of study or discipline, guiding them through the process of mechanical design from idea to rough sketch, to a finished product. Teach faculty and students how to design parts and understand specifications.
Manage Olin Shop budget to include planning for and making budget requests for major equipment purchases and supplies; purchase needed materials for various projects from local and long-distance vendors, including purchases charged to other departments' budgets; maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of commonly used parts and materials.
Maintain all shop equipment, laboratory, and scientific equipment; ensure that all equipment and supplies are kept in safe working condition.
Minimum Qualifications
Some college or vocational training or Associate's degree plus a minimum of five years related experience; experience with manual machining and fabrication techniques; working knowledge of engineering drawings and CAD technology; experience with welding technologies; ability to understand the structure and function of analytic instruments and learn to maintain and repair analytical instruments and apparatus utilized in scientific laboratories
Shop equipment includes: Bridgeport and Vectrax vertical milling machines; SuperMax engine lathe, Leven instrument lathe, and Precision Matthews HD lathe; Powermatic and Grizzly Industrial vertical drill presses; Hypertherm plasma cutter; 3-axis CNC benchtop milling machine; Lincoln Precision TIG welder and Miller Millermatic MIG welder; OTC 25-ton hydraulic press; metalwork finishing tools and woodworking equipment
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field; MET Mechanical Engineering Technologist; experience in set-up and operation of computer numerical control (CNC) equipment; experience in GMAW (MIG welding) and TIG welding operations; Certified Machinist Credentials; experience teaching machine shop skills and safety procedures; experience working with and teaching students proper machine shop usage and safety protocols.
