Job Profile Summary:

The Emergency General Surgery Medical Director (EGS MD) at Hillcrest has responsibility for oversight of patients who need EGS care at Hillcrest Hospital. Care of this patient population includes referrals from outside EDs and hospitals, inpatient and ED consults. Inpatient care including perioperative management, operative care, and daily rounding. Establishing and insuring patients have sufficient continuity of care and outpatient follow- up are essential.

This leader will spend the majority of their clinical time at Hillcrest Hospital. Hillcrest is currently a level II trauma center with over 500 inpatient beds and part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. This dynamic leader will work in a role similar to the Trauma MD, but with the developing EGS Program. They are responsible for overseeing the Hillcrest EGS Service and are responsible for ensuring that the faculty providing EGS care at Hillcrest are performing at a high level based on outcome and through-put criteria. The EGS MD will have 0.05 protected time to dedicate to the responsibilities of the position and will receive institutional support for this time.

This position reports to leadership across the organization and must be able to function in a matrix organization. They will report to the Chair of General Surgery, Enterprise Leadership of Trauma/ACS, and Hillcrest surgical leadership.

They will work with enterprise and system level leaders to develop care pathways that expedite care and optimize outcomes. The purposes of the role are to:

  1. help provide clinical management of EGS patients in the inpatient setting.

  2. assure coordinated, high-quality, and efficient care processes by measuring and reporting outcomes.

  3. apply interdisciplinary team approach to the care of patients.

  4. lead comprehensive educational efforts for a variety of clinical learners.

  5. assure that there is 24/7 coverage and work with key stakeholders to make the schedule.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Management/Care

  • Development of clinical protocols and care pathways for common diseases admitted to EGS.

  • Development of care pathways with other hospital service lines that consult us or care for patients with EGS conditions.

  • Review/develop care pathways in collaboration with nursing management teams.

  • Maintain, monitor outcomes and compliance with above pathways and protocols through meetings with stakeholder service lines and nursing management.

Quality

  • Ensure reporting of M and M to conferences and be responsible in corrective actions.

  • Establish and report benchmarks quarterly.

  • Address clinical quality issues with EGS attendings.

  • Identify clinical quality improvement issues with residents and work with residency programs to improve the performance and education of the resident.

Resident Education

  • Meet with the residents as they rotate onto EGS for resident orientation.

  • Meet with the residents to provide mid-rotation feedback.

  • Ensure the residents have a solid end of rotation feedback.

  • Provide feedback to faculty regarding developing educational concern.

EGS APP Education/Management

  • Work to develop the role of APPs on the service.

  • Assist with recruitment and interviewing personnel for vacant APP positions.

Future Developmental Goals

  • Develop EGS journal club.

  • Develop EGS registry.

  • Work to consider Emergency General Surgery Verification Visit by ACS/AAST in conjunction with enterprise partners and leadership.

Candidate Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be board certified in general surgery, board eligible/certified in surgical critical care preferred.

  • Maintenance of active credentials in general surgery and must be eligible/able for trauma call.

  • Eligible to obtain a medical license to practice medicine in the state of Ohio.

  • Relevant leadership experience in a matrixed health care environment, preferably in a large medical practice or hospital setting.

  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to motivate and teach individuals and groups, including peers.

  • Ability to deal objectively and fairly with controversial issues with an emphasis on problem solving using a professional, diplomatic and tactful communication style.

  • Ability to navigate a complex, regulatory landscape.
