UNC Health Care Certified Surg First Assist - Operating Room in Clayton, North Carolina

Summary:

The Certified Surgical First Assistant reports to the Section Chief of Surgery. During surgery, functions under the direction and supervision of the attending surgeon within the operating room and procedure venues requiring surgical services. Performs duties within the scope and practice of position set by the Association of Surgical Technologists. Determines and prepares surgical instruments, equipment and other sterile/nonsterile items for procedures. Prepares the operating room. Performs preoperative and postoperative duties for optimal results for patients. Provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative duties. Assists in all aspects of surgery including neonatal, infant, pediatric, and adult , heart & lung transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. When not functioning in an CST-FA role will be required to function as a Certified Surgical Technician in the Operating Room. Provides educational leadership in congenital cardiovascular surgical care for Surgical Technicians and Registered Nurses.

Responsibilities:

  1. Review and validate all necessary surgical instruments/equipment needed. Prepares surgical instruments, equipment and other sterile/non-sterile items for procedures. Positions patients as instructed by the surgeon. Assists in surgery and procedural room set up which includes advantageous placement of items for procedures according to practice

  2. Prepares patients for surgery which may include transport, prepping, positioning, and draping. Maintains integrity of surgical field. Performs preoperative and postoperative duties for optimal results of patients. Functions as a members of the operating room team.

  3. During surgery- appropriately places and secures retractors, provides packing with sponges, provides digital manipulation of tissue, provides suctioning, irrigating, or sponging, as needed. Manipulates suture materials ( e.g. loops, tags, running sutures). Clamps and/or cauterizes vessels or tissue. Ties and/or ligates clamped vessels or tissue. Applies hemostatic clips. Places local hemostatic agents. Applies tourniquets, vessel loops or non-crushing clamps for temporary hemostasis. Inserts drainage tubes and closes wound layers per surgeon’s direction. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body tissue planes. Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings.

  4. Post Surgery - Prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Assist in monitoring and transporting patient to PACU/ICU.

  5. Participates in departmental and hospital wide informational meetings and in-services, including staff meetings, hospital wide forums, and seminars. Reviews department and hospital wide policies and procedures annually. When not functioning in an CST-FA role will be required to function as a Certified Surgical Technician in the Operating Room.

  6. Supports staff and physicians after hours for emergency surgeries (on-call). Functions as a preceptor for new hire surgical technicians and nurses.

Education Requirements:

● Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited program. Associates degree in Health Sciences or similar field required.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

● Current Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assistant Certification. Current BLS and PALS certification.

Professional Experience Requirements:

● Requires five (5) years of experience as a surgical technician; Supervisory or managerial experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

● Provides safe and appropriate care within the standards set by the Association of Surgical Technologists.

● Demonstrates good critical thinking and problem solving skills. Able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of Surgical Assistant theory and practice.

● Provides education for Surgical Assistants, surgical technicians, and RNs within the scope of congenital cardiothoracic surgery.

● Communicate positively and professionally with all internal and external providers.
