Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Dialysis Technician 2 – Certified functions as a resource to non-certified Dialysis Technicians and other teammates in all aspects and duties on the Dialysis unit. This role is responsible for performing routine cleaning and disinfection of dialysis equipment, monitoring patients during treatment under the direction of a Registered Nurse, maintaining and updating patient records, and maintaining supply inventories. The Dialysis Technician 2 will participate in precepting new teammates and assist with clerical duties on the unit.

Essential Job Functions

  • Aware of AAMI, DHEC, CDC, and DOQI guidelines for dialysis equipment and infection control. Cleaning, disinfecting, and monitoring of dialysis equipment.

  • System setup and take down of dialysis machines for treatments, setup of required supplies for the treatment day, inclusive of setting up procedure room for temporary dialysis catheter placement.

  • Clerical duties for the unit: charges and charts. Ordering supplies: familiar with standard and non-standard orders.

  • Monitor water treatment system, perform weekly and as needed chemical disinfection of the dialysis machine, followed by documentation in departmental disinfection log, and changing of dialysis machine filter per instruction for use. Perform daily calibration of pHoenix meter.

  • Under the direction of a RN performs venipuncture of an AVG/AVF and transcribing treatment data to electronic medical record. Under the direction of a RN, may initiate and/or terminate dialysis treatments for those patients having an AVG/AVF.

  • Function as a resource to non-certified technicians and other teammates. Participates in precepting new teammates to the unit.

  • Identifies performance improvement initiative(s) on the unit and complete at least one PI Project within the rating period.

  • Acknowledges customers upon arrival to unit and demonstrates enthusiastic friendly approach.

  • Performs other job duties and responsibilities as required.

Licensing/Certification

Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card. Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) required at time of hire and must be maintained.

Education

Graduate of an accredited high school or GED equivalency examination. Successful completion of a dialysis technician training program.

Work Experience

Clinical work experience in Dialysis. Previous secretarial experience desirable.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping. Intermittent lifting, moving or carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands/arms. Frequent talking or hearing. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate noise level in work area. Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours. May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.

Skills

Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills :

  • Knowledge of clerical procedures and medical terminology.

  • Skill in maintaining patient care record.

  • Ability to file and maintain patient records, files and reports.

  • Ability to report changes in the patient’s condition to the professional nurse.

  • Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to administer patient care.

  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

  • Ability to use office equipment, such as multi-line telephones, computer terminals and printers.

Soft/Interpersonal Skills:

  • Skill in English grammar and spelling.

  • Neat, legible handwriting.

  • Excellent communication skills.
