Job Description

Your Team

As a Senior Accountant at Brookfield Residential, you will be an essential part of a team responsible for monthly accounting, job cost management, and financial reporting for selected land and housing projects. You will critically evaluate ongoing performance, efficiency, reporting, and internal controls for both operations and finance. You will produce accurate and timely accounting reports and financial statements, including Joint Venture reporting. Working independently on complex accounting tasks, you will also collaborate on various projects, directing and supervising staff to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and accurately.

Your Key Deliverables

  • Ensure accurate, timely, and complete recording and reporting of all transactions.

  • Liaise between operations staff, Head Office, and Division Accounting.

  • Perform specific tasks including recording sales, cost of sales, land acquisitions, and PAPA accruals.

  • Monitor and reconcile cash activities, track property taxes, and prepare payments.

  • Submit loan draws and joint venture capital calls.

  • Prepare billings, consolidation entries, and month-end closing entries.

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and working capital.

  • Manage SOX compliance and internal controls.

  • Liaise with auditors and improve process documentation.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end working papers, reconciliations, and variance analysis.

  • Verify land development budget accuracy.

  • Prepare tax filings and corporate reports.

  • Maintain and improve reports using InformXL or Spreadsheet Server.

  • Respond to requests from other departments with strong communication skills.

  • Lead sections of department meetings and contribute to training and development.

  • Tackle special projects, create procedures, forms, templates, and reconciliations.

    Must Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 5 years of experience, or equivalent mix of education and experience.

  • Proven experience in financial reporting, working paper preparation, full-cycle, and job cost accounting.

  • Strong business acumen and willingness to learn about the business.

  • Exceptional work ethic and goal oriented.

  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, detail-oriented, and possesses superior organizational skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines while managing multiple departments/managers and assignments.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

    Nice to Haves

  • Relevant land and/or homebuilding accounting experience preferred.
