Amentum Senior Paralegal in Camp Springs, Maryland

Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal or a Project Manager.

The following tasks are required to support the Visa Petition Appeals:

  • Organize, update and ensure completeness of individual litigation files Perform all systems checks including, but not limited to, National Files Tracking System (NFTS), Computer Linked Application Information Management System (CLAIMS), Person Centric Query System (PCQS), Tableau to determine the status and location of the applications/petitions subject of case, and other factual details to determine the validity of facts as articulated in the appeal

  • Compile, prepare, and summarize relevant materials for use by attorneys in in preparation of the appeal.

  • Use legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform moderately complex legal research to support USCIS’ briefing of the defense of the visa petition appeal

  • Use a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems

  • Perform any necessary moderately complex legal research and assist with drafting simple government brief in support of the underlying decision for OCC attorney signature

  • Draft trend reports and narratives summarizing common issues that arise in visa petition appeals

Work product is reviewed before submission; however, often develops drafts with minimal direct supervision other than written guidelines. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintains case files in electronic and hardcopy formats.

  • Organize, update and ensure completeness of litigation fields

  • Performs moderately complex legal research in Lexis and Westlaw.

  • Reviews and synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use.

  • Compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs, and other legal documents.

  • Reviews case-related materials for evidentiary value and, for example, identifies potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation.

  • Writes preliminary drafts of memoranda and correspondence.

  • Proofread, edits, and conducts cite-checking on draft legal documents and filings.

  • Indexes, tracks, and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery).

  • Indexes, tracks, and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial.

  • Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.

  • Other examples of the types of work to be performed include production requests, communicating with witnesses, maintaining databases in SharePoint, summarizing depositions and other transcripts, preparing exhibits for trial, etc.

  • This position is expected to be on-site at USCIS Office, Telework may be permitted depending on office need.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

  • Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience; or an equivalent level of education may be substituted.

  • Additionally, at least two years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required; trial experience very helpful.

  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.

  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.

  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.

  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.

  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Trial paralegal experience preferred.

  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

  • Knowledge of case/workflow management and database systems preferred.

  • Knowledge of scanning systems, workflow, and quality control preferred.
