As a Staff Assistant, you will:

  • Answer and transfer calls to appropriate contacts, provide an initial screening to callers eligible for our services, and refer callers seeking services outside of our practice areas to appropriate legal or social services agencies.

  • Greet and attend to walk-ins, guests, and visitors and direct them as appropriate.

  • Check and manage the general and Spanish-language voicemail messages daily and follow-up with referral/information when appropriate.

  • Assist the Program Administrator with scheduling and tracking requests for interpretations and translations. Interpret for Spanish-speaking clients or potential clients during case-related phone calls, meetings, or intake interviews. Translate documents in English to Spanish and Spanish to English and edit Spanish language documents written by students.

  • Perform a variety of financial transactions including processing payments and invoices, reimbursements, producing financial reports for budget monitoring, and assisting in monthly reconciliation of bank accounts.

  • Assist the members of the student Board of Directors with administrative tasks as needed (i.e. updating alumni contact sheets and distribution lists, data entry in case management software).

  • Assist with other administrative duties including organizing documents and record keeping, faxes, printing room schedules, handling incoming/outgoing mail, order and maintain office supplies, and support tasks related to the summer and fall orientation sessions.

  • Attend staff meetings and student orientation sessions when able to and appropriate for training and community building.

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB) is a student-run civil legal aid organization committed to providing free representation to low-income and marginalized communities in the Greater Boston area. HLAB is seeking a part-time (20 hours per week, 0.57 FTE) bilingual staff assistant who will serve as receptionist, interpret phone calls and meetings, translate legal documents and provide administrative support to students and staff.
