Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for an Senior Water Quality Specialist to join our aquatics team. The position will ideally be located Calgary. The ideal candidate has experience developing and implementing complex water quality programs. Experience should include data analysis, environmental assessment and permitting, for a variety of projects and sectors. Work may include water sampling, water quality and ecotoxicology environmental effects assessments (i.e., Provincial and Federal Environmental Assessments), environmental conditions evaluations, and environmental effects monitoring, in freshwater and marine environments. Reporting is a large component of this position and strong technical writing skills are an asset.

As a Water Quality Specialist, you will conduct exciting work with multi-disciplinary teams, on varied projects across Canada. You will also provide sound advice to industry, regulators, and internal team members. The successful candidate will join a group who value teamwork and enjoy the company of their colleagues.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, manage and support water quality and ecotoxicology components of projects

  • Design field sampling programs for baseline characterization, fate transport, and effects assessment, of chemical parameters in the aquatic environment

  • Understand current techniques for sampling and analysis of water quality data from streams, rivers and lakes

  • Develop and maintain large water quality datasets

  • Assist with design and development of water quality models to support effects assessment for freshwater and marine environments

  • Interpret water quality data in relation to aquatic biota, livestock, and/or human health

  • Perform statistical analyses of water quality data to detect spatial and temporal trends, significant differences, and guideline exceedances

  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program

  • Proposal writing

  • Technical writing and report preparation

  • Quality review of technical documents

  • Support field work as needed

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Understanding of federal and provincial water and sediment quality guidelines, legislation and regulations

  • Developing field programs and methods to meet specific project objectives

  • Leading field crews for water quality programs

  • Developing health and safety protocols for field programs

  • Managing and analyzing data (statistical experience is an asset)

  • Writing clear, concise and accurate technical reports, environmental assessments and other industry documents

  • Leading junior staff in data management and report preparation

Education and Experience

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the environmental sciences (e.g., toxicology, biology, chemistry).

Registration, or ability to register, with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists is required.

Minimum of 8-10 years of experience as a water quality specialist, with relevant consulting experience as outlined in the Capabilities and Experience section.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
