About You and this Role

Dowis currently seeking a Power System Protective Relay Engineer.You will provide electrical protective relaying support for Dow’s Path to Zero Project in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. You will support sites that are large privately owned and operated industrial power systems that have thousands of protective relays in service on transmission, distribution, and generation assets.

This role will support efforts for the Path2Zero program, which will create the first net-zero emissions site of its kind in the world. The expectation is that the candidate will initially be located inCalgary (AB, CAN)and relocate toFort Saskatchewan (AB, CAN)at a later date. Candidates that are currently located in Fort Saskatchewan, but willing to travel to Calgary, will also be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide protective relay designs including development of one- and three-line diagrams, interconnect and wiring diagrams, DC schematics, and control logic for medium and high voltage substations.

  • Projects will include both new installations and modifications to existing installations and are often executed in energized substations.

  • Develop protection settings and logic or perform reviews of protection settings and logic developed by others.

  • Perform complex electrical calculations as required to set and program protective relays.

  • Implement relay-to-relay and relay-to-SCADA communication using a variety of communication protocols and network topologies.

  • Develop electrical models (fault, load flow, stability) as required for protective relay studies on new or existing facilities.

  • Utilize system studies in order to evaluate or design protective relay and substation control systems for appropriate protection and coordination.

  • Access, utilize, and in some cases develop or improve Dow Most Effective Technology (MET) related to protective relay systems. Interface with Dow Electrical Discipline Teams and Protection & Control Technical Solutions Team as necessary to accomplish this.

  • Serve as a technical resource for day-to-day operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and safety investigations associated with protective relaying systems.

  • Interface with third-party electrical suppliers and influence their protection designs and settings at Supplier/Dow interconnection points to meet Dow’s needs.

  • Analyze post-fault data, including metering and transient recorder data and aid in investigating electrical events and provide system restoration recommendations.

  • Proficient using ETAP.

  • Knowledge of PSS/E and Aspen Oneliner preferred.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

  • Capability to work flexible schedules as necessary to meet project deadlines.

  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 10% annually usually with short notice.

  • A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

Additional Notes:

  • Domestic relocation assistance is available for this role and may be provided based on eligibility.

  • Initially, role would be located in Calgary with design team until July 2025

  • Primary location at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada

  • This role requires incumbent to be in person onsite.

  • May be required to travel to any Dow site globally with short notice.
