Job Summary

The EHS Technician has overall responsibility for supporting compliance, collecting data for analysis, handling waste materials, conducting inspections, and completing EHS risk assessments in all functional areas of the Caguas, Puerto Rico manufacturing facility, as required by EHS-related regulations. The role is responsible for supporting the Operational, Planning & Control, and Emergency Preparedness & Response functions of the EHS Management System. The EHS Technician supports and directly reports to the Senior EHS Specialist.

Job Details/Responsibilities

  • Conduct EHS inspections for applicable compliance programs, including but not limited to, spill prevention and control, confined spaces, stormwater pollution prevention, emergency preparedness & response, including fire protection, chemical management, walking-working surfaces, personal protective equipment, electrical systems & lockout tagout, powered industrial trucks, materials handling & storage, machinery & machine guarding, hand and portable powered tools & other hand-held equipment, welding, cutting & brazing, respiratory protection, contractors, and ergonomics.

  • Implement corrective action plans, as guided, for observations related to accidents, EHS inspections and EHS risk assessments.

  • Maintain all required environmental records and documented information related to EHS inspections and EHS risk assessments, non-hazardous waste inventory, confined spaces inventory, lockout tagout procedures, chemical inventory & safety data sheets.

  • Participate in operational areas EHS inspections.

  • Support operational areas in the implementation, follow up and successful closure of corrective actions arising from EHS inspections.

  • Supply, operate and maintain an available inventory of containers for waste management (drums, pails, etc.), personal protective equipment (PPE) or other supplies as requested by the supervisor.

  • Coordinate timely pick-up of waste materials, including compressed carton, wood (pallets), plastics and metals or other waste materials as needed.

  • Execute work permits for hazardous tasks, as required.

Job Responsibilities (continued)

  • Move containers with waste from the accumulation areas to the applicable waste storage and/or disposal area, maintaining records of such movements when required.

  • Assure areas have containers available for managing waste, including but not limited to containers for waste chemicals, recycling, sharps, etc.

  • Serve as contact point for handling and moving biohazardous materials to the waste storage area (products from First Aid response, contaminated clothing, etc.).

  • Implement recommended corrective measures to be applied based on results of waste management, audits, or any potential impact.

  • Support the EHS training program for the site.

  • Support emergency response drills.

  • Maintain the Lockers Program for the facility.

  • Be part of the First Responders Team of the facility.

  • Be part of the EHS Committee, participating in monthly meetings and initiatives.

  • Support Manufacturing Operations by participating in the daily Production Meeting.

  • Actively participate in site engagement committees to promote an EHS culture.

  • Maintain documentation related to EHS purchases, in compliance with budget expectations.

  • Support data gathering for EHS-related reports to Terumo Corporate, EHS-related KPIs (EHS Index), the associate participation program (¡Cuenta Conmigo!), implementing and following up on completion of actions.

  • Support purchasing of EHS-related materials, repairs, and maintenance.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Basic foundation in safety and environmental legal requirements.

  • Able to deliver results accurately and with a high sense of urgency.

  • Basic understanding of EHS technical skills necessary to perform traditional EHS duties (for example, inspections and risk assessments).

  • Able to influence positive behaviors by setting the example to follow.

  • Fluent in Spanish and English, both verbally and in writing is preferred.

  • Able to work with computer programs and applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point), Teams, etc. is preferred.

  • This is an onsite role, no availability for remote work.

Qualifications/ Background Experiences

  • Associate degree with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with EHS programs in medical devices and/or pharmaceuticals industries, preferred; or, bachelor’s degree with a minimum of one (1) year experience working with EHS programs in medical devices and/or pharmaceuticals industries, preferred.

  • OSHA 30-hours for General Industry or Construction Industry a plus.

  • HAZWOPER 40-hours a plus.

  • HAZMAT training a plus.

  • Experience working in ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 environments a plus.

  • Basic knowledge of applicable EHS Federal, State, and Local laws and statutes.
