Position Summary:
This position is located within the Facilities Department (https://www.buffalo.edu/administrative-services/about-us/leadership-and-organization/admin-svcs-units/university-facilities.html) at the University. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for:
Applies paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to interior and exterior surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings, to furniture, a variety of equipment, signs and like surfaces requiring protective or decorative treatment.
As required, erects scaffolding, swing stages, or ladders.
Places drop cloths over shrubbery, furniture, or floors to avoid paint splattering.
Moves furniture and moveable equipment from area to be painted.
Prepares surfaces for painting using a variety of tools and materials including sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool, and if required removes paints using paint remover, blow torch, wire brush, or scraper.
Removes electrical wall plates prior to painting and replaces when job is completed.
Fills nail holes, cracks, crevices, or joints with putty, plaster or other filler.
Uses premixed paints or prepares paint tip match specified colors by mixing the required portions of pigment, oil, and thinners.
Paints surfaces using brush, spray gun, paint roller, or mittens.
Cleans brushes and equipment with soap and water, turpentine, or other solvents.
Cleans work area of spotted paint and dirt. May assist in covering interior walls with wall coverings.
Prepares and cleans surfaces to be covered and cuts wall covering to proper lengths.
Mixes paste, brushes on back of wall covering, and places and smooths strips on wall.

Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate must meet one of the qualifications:
Two years of full time experience in painting work under the supervision of a skilled trades person; OR
Completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employee Association- Partnership ( NYS CSEA -P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA -P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA -P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Preferred Qualifications:
Must be a quick learner and exhibit self motivational skills.
Adequate ability to understand specialty plumbing, mechanical, electrical and building systems.
Strong team mentality.
Willing to earn technical certification’s, relevant training, or other documentation that illustrates depth in this trade.
Understand and execute safe work practices and procedures.
Demonstrate applicable institutional knowledge and practices of the campuses and its operation.
