Job Summary:

A Behavior Health Specialist (BHS) works with high risk children in residential settings licensed by the Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS). These children and youth served range from ages five to eighteen and require various levels of supervision, support, and intervention, as they work through and deal with the issues that have led to their placements. Our goal for children in care is to help them heal from the traumas they have experienced and learn better coping strategies. BHS will be trained in trauma sensitivity and taught effective intervention strategies to use with children. BHS are responsible for providing behavioral intervention to promote safety, using trauma sensitive strategies. BHS will assist children to learn and develop age appropriate daily living skills to assist them to successfully reintegrate into their home communities. BHS will serve as role models and mentors.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Responsible for the direct supervision of the clients at all times.

  2. Teaches clients living skills such as decision making, personal control, interpersonal communication and problem solving, dressing, grooming and eating.

  3. Instructs and monitors to ensure that the daily routine, structure and habilitative programming is maintained and all related standards are met.

  4. Supervises and assists in transporting clients as required.

  5. Manages a clean and safe work environment.

  6. Assists in the planning and implementation of the treatment plan.

  7. Interacts with clients in ways that are therapeutic, respectful and trauma sensitive.

  8. Utilizes preventative and de-escalation techniques that are consistent with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)

  9. Completes all required paperwork (e.g.: ICMP, BIP, monthly summaries, daily logs etc.) including electronic record entry.

  10. Performs any other duties listed on the program specific responsibility checklist assigned by the supervisor.

Education & Experience:

  • 60 credit hours completed AND currently enrolled in 4-year degree program in Human Services or related field

Or

  • Associate’s Degree

Or

  • A High School diploma/GED with one year of paid child care experience

Required License/Registration/Certification:

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License

  • TCI Certification (Training provided by OLVHS)

Physical Requirements:

  • The overall nature of the position is sedentary requiring little physical effort with occasional light physical exertion required. There is little, if any, exposure to environmental conditions.

  • The frequent physical demands of the position are standing, walking, climbing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.

  • The occasional physical demands of the position are lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling.
