Primary Purpose:
Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Safely operate a school bus to transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
Valid Texas commercial drivers license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsement)
Texas School Bus Driver Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to communicate effectively Knowledge of student discipline procedure Ability to manage student behavior Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Ability to pass bus driver physical exam Ability to operate bus safely

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules
Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify shop supervisor of needed repairs, when necessary.
Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
Keep records on bus mileage and number of passengers transported, when needed.
Keep inside of bus clean and request that bus be washed when necessary.
Make sure that a vehicle has enough fuel before taking it out on an extra-curricular trip or regular route.
For extra-curricular trips, when refueling is required, also check engine oil levels and coolant levels.
Student Management
Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
Communicate directly with parents in a timely manner when students cannot correct their behavior on their own while on bus or at a bus stop.
Maintain discipline consistent with school district expectations, as stated in the Code of Student Conduct on School Buses.
When necessary, report student discipline problems to the Operations Specialist by completing a written Bus Conduct Report in a timely manner.
Instruct students on safe bus riding rules and regulations.
Safety
Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses, including local school district policies and procedures.
Before each route or extra-curricular trip, inspect bus by checking tires, lights, brakes, horn, windshield wipers and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflectors.
Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform Director of Transportation, Safety Training Coordinator or shop personnel of any conditions that are not correctable.
Report any hazardous conditions along the route, if it compromises the safety of the transportation operation.
Other
Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office, other buses, and school campuses, only when necessary, following appropriate radio procedures.
Be available to work irregular hours as needed.
Attend and complete required training program to maintain state safety certification.
Perform any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasional districtwide travel. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
